- The editor explains the origins of the British Road Book project and the extensive fieldwork — including over six hundred letters to local correspondents — required to gather accurate road descriptions for the southern and western counties. He sets out the aims of the series and acknowledges the imperfections inevitably remaining in this first volume.
- Explains the geographical scope of Volume I (bounded north by the Thames, west by the main Bristol road), describes the layout of each route entry — forward description, reverse directions, mileage columns, and distance tables — and defines the symbols used for dangerous hills, warning notices, square-bracket side-trips, and road-surface gradings.
- The largest section of the book, containing several hundred numbered routes covering all the main cycling roads from London and the Thames corridor southward through Kent and Sussex, westward through Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire, and Dorset, and north-west through Somerset and Gloucestershire as far as Bristol and Bath — including routes to the Channel ports Dover, Folkestone, and Ryde, and linking roads to Bournemouth, Weymouth, Salisbury, and the Isle of Wight ferry terminals.
- The main road from London Bridge through the Borough, New Cross, Deptford, Blackheath, Welling, Dartford, Gravesend, Rochester, Chatham, Sittingbourne, Faversham and Canterbury to Sarre and Margate, warning that the wood- and granite-paved city streets give way to a very steep climb up Blackheath Hill, a treacherous Shooters Hill that strangers should not attempt, and a toilsome three-quarter-mile ascent of Boughton Hill.
- An easier line to Dartford avoiding Blackheath and Shooters Hills, running by New Cross, the short steep granite-setted Loampit Hill, Lewisham, Lee Green (Tiger's Head Inn), Eltham, Blackfen, Blendon, Bexley and Crayford, over good gravel that is much cut up and heavy in July and August by the fruit traffic.
- Follows the Margate road for seven miles, then turns down Park Lane and across the bumpy Woolwich-common past the Commandant's house, descending by very uneven macadam through Thomas Street, Greens End and Powis Street to the Free Ferry, which crosses to North Woolwich at frequent intervals for the Essex roads.
- Leaves the Margate road at the common-keeper's lodge on Blackheath and runs by good gravel beside Greenwich Park wall to the Standard P.H. and through Charlton village, where the surface is generally very uneven, then over a steep hill and down Artillery Place into Woolwich; a third route by Greenwich and Lower Charlton is called quite unsuited to cycling.
- Runs from the Free Ferry by Hare Street, Powis Street and Greens End over Woolwich-common past St. George's Church and the Royal Military Academy, then through Eltham, Eltham Station and Mottingham, where a sudden bend under a railway bridge is followed by a very steep three-quarter-mile climb over rough heavy surface before the fall through Widmore into Bromley.
- Takes the Eltham and Bromley road to the fork short of Widmore, then a narrow but excellent road past Bickley Station and Southborough and a winding, sometimes rough lane to Bromley-common (Trinity Church), continuing over Locks Bottom to Farnborough and thence by the main London road to Sevenoaks.
- Crosses Woolwich-common and Park Lane to Blackheath, drops to Blackheath Station and over Belmont Hill to Lewisham, whose road is execrably rough, then by Rushey Green, Southend, Beckenham and Elmers End to Woodside, where great care is needed because the partly disused tramlines project considerably above the road surface.
- Follows Woolwich-common, Park Lane, Blackheath and Blackheath Hill down to Deptford and New Cross, then Queen's Road and Peckham, Camberwell Green, Cold Harbour Lane past Loughborough Junction, and Acre Lane to Clapham and Wandsworth, over uneven macadam and granite paving carrying considerable heavy traffic.
- Leaves the Margate road at Shoulder of Mutton Green by a small nursery garden and winds through East Wickham, then climbs a long stiff slope to Bostall Heath, where the surface is very loose in dry weather, before a good run down to Lessness-heath and Erith.
- Runs from the Free Ferry through Beresford Square and along Plumstead Road, well paved with granite sets, then up the very steep, winding and always rough Bostall Hill and across Bostall Heath to Lessness-heath, Belvedere, the steep Friday Hill, Erith, Perry-street and the narrow steep descent of Crayford High Street into Dartford.
- Leaves Dartford by Lowfield Street over excellent gravel through Hawley, Sutton at Hone and Farningham Road Station to Farningham, where the abrupt narrow turn into the village needs caution and several dangerous sewer-gratings lie beyond the bridge, then by Eynesford, Shoreham and Otford to St. John's Hill and Sevenoaks.
- Climbs West Hill out of Dartford and runs by Crayford, Bexley, North Cray and the narrow tortuous St. Mary Cray to Orpington, then over Locks Bottom, Keston Mark and Hayes Common, down Coney Hill and up the steep winding Rectory Hill to West Wickham and Shirley, joining the tramlines at East Croydon Station.
- Ascends Gravesend High Street over rough cobble paving and runs by Northumberland Bottom, Nursted, Hook Green, Meopham, Culverstone Green and The Vigo (Horse and Groom Inn) to the top of Wrotham Hill, which descends very rapidly and turns about at awkward angles into Wrotham, thence by Borough Green, Ightham and Shipborne to Tunbridge, where dangerous sewer-gratings lie in the main street.
- Turns out of Rochester by Crow Lane and climbs steadily past the cemetery to Bridgewood Gate, then past the Upper Bell Inn to Blue Bell Hill, a mile-long descent of three distinct slopes whose lower one winds awkwardly to the left, continuing past the Lower Bell Inn to Sandling (Running Horse Inn) and down Week Street into Maidstone.
- Climbs from the Town Pier up Railway Street and under the viaduct, where the gradient steepens over very inferior surface, past the L.C. & D. station and Chatham cemetery to Bridgewood Gate, and thence by the Rochester road over Blue Bell Hill to Maidstone.
- Runs north from the Keys Inn through Bobbing and Iwade to Kingsferry Bridge, where the river is crossed by the railway bridge for a toll of 2d. including machine, then over loose heavy level road past the Queenborough turning to Halfway House Inn and Sheerness, the surface often roughened by the constant passage of cattle.
- Leaves the Margate road at Ospringe by the Ship Inn for Faversham, whose main street is narrow and paved with stone sets, then by East Street, Head Hill, Goodnestone and Graveney down to the marshes, where the road passes through three gates and runs along the sea-wall before turning inland to Whitstable, Swalecliffe and Herne Bay.
- Leaves Faversham by Market and Preston Streets and the Mall, joins Watling Street, and runs mostly uphill by Copton to Badlesmere Lees, then past a windmill to Challock Lees (Halfway House) and over Challock Hill, whose first half-mile of descent is rather steep, falling through Boughton Lees and Kennington Lees to Ashford over good surface throughout.
- Follows the Ashford road past Badlesmere Lees, then meets a short, steep and awkward descent with a sudden bend midway before rising to the top of Charing Hill, whose descent into the village is very steep and rough.
- Runs north from Westgate over the level crossing by St. Dunstan's Church and rises steadily for a mile and a half, steep at the top, to Blean, then continues by sharp but not severe gradients to the top of Borstal Hill, from which a steep rough descent drops into Whitstable.
- Takes the Margate road to Sturry, then climbs a long rather steep hill to Broadoak and a stiff pull up Calcott Hill, with very good surface, running down by Herne-common to Herne and level past Eddington and along William Street to the Esplanade at Herne Bay.
- A well signposted road climbing past the waterworks to Hunters Forstal and running on high ground with excellent surface through Broomfield and Highstead, then down a long hill, steep in the middle with an awkward bend, to Marshside, Chislet and Upstreet, joining the main London to Margate road for Sarre.
- Rises by High Street to East Margate (First and Last Inn), passes under the railway and climbs a mile to the Star Inn, then runs almost level to Ramsgate S.E. Railway station, beyond which a long awkward descent leads down into the town.
- Branches from the Ramsgate road beyond the Star Inn, crosses the London and Ramsgate road at Haine and descends to the coast for Sandwich, leaving by the drawbridge and Galliard Street past the Three Colts Inn, then rises by long steady slopes through Eastry to the top of Whitfield Hill and drops by Ewell (also known as Kearsney) and Buckland into Dover, the surface rough and bumpy near the town.
- Follows the Margate road as far as Sarre, then climbs a gentle slope and runs by Monkton-church and Mount Pleasant to the long ascent of Nethercourt Hill, ending at St. Lawrence, from which High Street falls rather steeply, wood-paved at the bottom, into Ramsgate.
- Ascends a steady incline from Sarre to Monkton-church and runs through Monkton to Minster, where the surface is often damp and heavy from sheltering trees and high hedges, then winds by a pillar letter-box through the hamlet of Sevenscore and over a level crossing to join the Margate to Sandwich road at an old toll-house.
- Takes the Margate road to Canterbury, then goes through the city by High Street and St. George's Street to the cattle market and Church Street, climbing the short but rather steep St. Martin's Hill before a good downhill run to Littlebourne, Bramling, Wingham and Ash, and thence into Deal.
- Follows the London to Deal road to Wingham, then turns off by a narrow undulating road to Staple, where a blacksmith's forge marks the turning, and runs past the Prince of Wales Inn and Statenborough Corner through the hamlet of Felderland to Worth Corner, climbing a short steep hill to Sholden and Upper Deal.
- Follows the Margate road to Canterbury, then climbs past the cattle market by steep gradients to the Gate Inn and drops to Bridge, rising to Barham Downs and running level past Broom Park at the 63rd milestone and Halfway House to the top of Lydden Hill, a mile-long rather steep descent, continuing by Ewell (also known as Kearsney) and Buckland into Dover.
- Leaves the Dover road at the fork by Broom Park and falls by a long hill, steep in parts, to Denton, then climbs to the top of White Hill beyond Hawkinge, whose descent is very steep and rough, and is followed by the equally steep Windgate Hill scored by water channels, dropping past the Black Bull Inn and under the railway viaduct into Folkestone.
- Goes out of Canterbury by the Old Dover Road past St. Lawrence Cricket Ground to Street-end, joins the Roman Stone Street and climbs the steep rough hill known as Gravelly Shoot, then runs by the George Inn and through West Wood to Hampton Hill, whose descent is a mile long, steep, rough in places and very tortuous, falling by Westenhanger and Stanford to New Inn Green.
- Runs by New Cross and Eltham to Pope-street, Sidcup, Foots Cray, Birchwood and Swanley Junction, then down the narrow bend into Farningham with its dangerous sewer-gratings, up long severe slopes to Kingsdown and down to Wrotham, on by Wrotham-heath, Larkfield and Ditton to Maidstone, then Harrietsham, Lenham, Charing and Ashford to Hythe and Sandgate, where the long steep Sandgate Hill into Folkestone may be avoided by the private Lower Sandgate Road at a toll of 1d.
- Leaves Maidstone by High Street and King Street and rises steadily to Detling, beyond which comes a very steep unrideable ascent of Detling Hill, followed by nearly all downhill running by easy gradients to Stockbury (Squirrels Inn) and the Keys Inn at Key-street on the London and Margate road.
- Descends the narrow roughly paved Gabriels Hill and climbs a long difficult rise by the cemetery, then runs through Loose, Linton, Stile Bridge, Staplehurst, Cranbrook-pound and Willsley Green into Cranbrook, whose narrow entry is often blocked by vehicles, continuing by Hartley, Tubslake, the stiff ascent to Highgate, Hawkhurst, Cripps Corner, Sedlescombe and Kent-street to Silverhill and Hastings.
- Follows the Cranbrook road to Linton, then keeps right at Stile Bridge for Marden, crossing the railway bridge at the station, and climbs a long steep ascent to Goudhurst, beyond which a very steep stony hill descends and the road skirts Bedgebury Park over very rough surface to join the main London and Hastings road near Flimwell.
- Leaves Cranbrook eastward by Stone Street past the windmill and brewery and runs by undulating good-surfaced road to Benenden and Rolvenden, then descends steeply to a stream and rises correspondingly into Tenterden.
- Also leaves by Stone Street but forks left at the brewery for Posten Green over a heavy surface, then runs chiefly uphill and undulating to a steep rough descent at two and a half miles, followed by a stiff rise into Tenterden over fair but rough and heavy going.
- Crosses the Medway below Maidstone and rises stiffly to Barming, then runs down to East Barming and on by Teston, Wateringbury, Mereworth and Hadlow over an almost level road of exceptionally good surface, with a sudden bend over a stream and sharp turn near the approach to Tunbridge.
- Leaves Ashford by North Street from the Saracen's Head Hotel and runs almost level through Godmersham, Chilham and Chartham, with one short steep descent short of the seventh milestone and often very loose sandy going at the railway bridge near the twelfth.
- Goes out by Bank Street and the Corn Exchange over the railway bridge at the station and by Beaver and Kingsnorth-pound, then falls by a long descent with an awkward bend near the top into Ham-street, runs beside the canal to Appledore over level rough stony road, and continues by Reading-street, where an abrupt turn crosses the streams, rising over loose heavy surface to Wittersham-stocks.
- Follows the Rye road to Ham-street, then crosses the marshes by level but rough heavy road through Snave to Brenzett, where the Fleur de Lis Inn marks the turn, and on by Brenzett Corner and Old Romney to New Romney; the book calls it very heavy and monotonous riding.
- Leaves Ashford by New Street and runs with a slight rise and descent at Great Chart to Bethersden (Bull Inn), beyond which come a steep rough hill and a second steep fall near the eighth milestone, then a short rise to High Halden and an easy descent at Boars Isle, locally known as St. Michaels, falling gradually into Tenterden.
- Follows the main Hastings road to Flimwell, turning off at the Hare and Hounds Inn for Highgate and Sandhurst, then descends sharply to Newenden and the bridge over the Rother, rising to Northiam and running by Beckley, Four Oaks, Peasmarsh and Playden, from which a gradual then much steeper fall over rough heavy surface leads across the railway bridge into Rye.
- Takes the Folkestone road to Maidstone, then turns down Gabriels Hill and climbs to the cemetery before descending to Sutton Valence, Headcorn, Biddenden, Boars Isle and Tenterden, going on by Rolvenden, Wittersham and Wittersham-stocks, where a very steep, tortuous and rough hill drops to the marshes and a steep climb leads to Iden and Playden above Rye.
- Runs east from Tenterden by Leigh Green and down to Reading-street, then crosses the marshes on level but exceedingly rough and scarcely rideable road to Appledore, over the canal and the level crossing at Appledore station, continuing through Snargate, Brenzett Corner and Old Romney; described as very heavy and monotonous.
- Turns sharply at the Black Horse Inn at the western end of Tenterden and falls, mostly downhill and rather steeply at the end, to Small Hythe over poor surface, then crosses half a mile of very rough loose marsh before a long ascent to Wittersham, where it joins the Maidstone to Rye road.
- Follows the Rye road as far as Rolvenden, then keeps right down a steep hill and runs almost level for half a mile before a stiff rise to a cross-road, from which a short steep slope descends over rather rough surface into Newenden.
- The direct road by New Cross, Loampit Hill, Lewisham and Rushey Green, up Bromley Hill to Bromley, Locks Bottom and Farnborough, then down to Greenstreet Green, where a cross-road near the bottom has caused serious accidents, and on by Halstead, the Polhill Arms and Sepham Hill to Dunton Green, Riverhead and Sevenoaks, over the very steep and rough River Hill with its two awkward bends to Tunbridge, Pembury, Lamberhurst, Flimwell, the steep circuitous Silver Hill, Robertsbridge, Johns Cross and Battle, finishing by Hollington and Silverhill into Hastings.
- A 10.25-mile cross-suburb run from Lewisham Bank by Rushey Green and Catford Bridge to Forest Hill, where a very steep hill of nearly a quarter-mile is followed by a long descent past Lordship Lane Station, then on past Dulwich College, Tulse Hill, Streatham Place and Clapham Common to Battersea Rise and Wandsworth.
- Follows the tramlines from Lewisham through Rushey Green, Catford Bridge, Perryhill and Bell Green, then climbs a long hill and the much steeper West Hill to Crystal Palace Parade, drops down the very steep and rough Central Hill to Lower Norwood, and continues by Streatham common, Streatham church and Upper Mitcham to Merton, 12.75 miles.
- Leaves Tunbridge by East Street on an almost level road of excellent surface through Hadlow, thence slightly undulating with an upward tendency to Mereworth, where Route 53 is followed for the remaining 12 miles into Rochester (19.5 miles in all).
- A 12.75-mile road that climbs stiffly out of Robertsbridge to Johns Cross and Vinehall, crosses Cripps's Corner and runs by long steady slopes through Broad Oak and Udimore over a rough neglected surface that rides better at the sides, finishing with a long run down into Rye by a level crossing near the station.
- Takes the direct Hastings road for 30 miles to Tunbridge, then climbs the long tedious Quarry Hill to Southborough and Tunbridge Wells, ascends the steep tortuous Frant Hill with its loose heavy surface, and runs by Wadhurst, Ticehurst and Hurstgreen to rejoin the direct road for Hastings, 63.75 miles.
- Climbs out of Tunbridge Wells by Grovehill and Fairmile Roads to Pembury, then runs by Hale-street, East Peckham and Mereworth to Town Malling, Leybourne and Snodland, crossing tramways from the chalk quarries before the top of White Hart Hill and a steep winding descent into Cuxton, finishing over rough macadam through Strood to Rochester.
- Follows the Rochester road to Hale-street, then takes the fairly level but slightly stony road by Nettlested Green to Wateringbury Station and village, and runs through Teston and East Barming to a long gradual rise at Barming followed by a steepening descent over Maidstone bridge, 17.75 miles with a good surface except the last mile.
- An 18.5-mile road going by Hale-street and East Peckham, with a good run down beyond the church and a rather steep rise to the Beech Inn, then a steep descent to a railway bridge with a sudden bend at the foot onto the Folkestone–London road, and finally mostly rising to Wrotham over a surface that turns rough and uneven.
- A 31.5-mile route leaving by Nevile Street and Frant Road past Frant Station and Hook Green, dropping steeply into Lamberhurst and climbing Clay Hill to Goudhurst, then running by Iden Green, Sissinghurst, Three Chimneys, Biddenden, High Halden and Bethersden to Great Chart and Ashford — the book warns that direction posts around Lamberhurst give misleading distances.
- A short 6.5-mile road east from Goudhurst church over a fairly level surface to Iden Green, then easy running with a slight upward tendency by Glassenbury to Hartley, and chiefly descending through Tubslake before a very stiff ascent into Highgate.
- Follows the Tunbridge Wells and Hastings road for 9.75 miles to Ticehurst, then turns left downhill and runs undulating and chiefly rising over a good surface to Flimwell, where the main London road is joined for the run to Rye, 20.5 miles.
- Takes the Hastings road to Hurstgreen, then descends past the Junction Inn by a steep rough fall into Bodiam, climbs to Staple Cross and drops to the Robertsbridge–Rye road, finishing through Broad Oak over a rutty uneven surface that rides best at the sides.
- A 22.75-mile road skirting the common out of Tunbridge Wells, with a rapid descent to Eridge Station followed by an almost continuous three-mile climb — steepest up to Boarshead-street — to Crowborough, then a steep first pitch down towards Uckfield and an easy fall by Ringles Cross to Lewes.
- A 27-mile coastal road by East Margate, St Peters, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and St Lawrence, down Nethercourt Hill to Sandwich — whose drawbridge gate is locked after 10 p.m. and must be called open — then by Worth Corner, Sholden, Deal, Walmer, Ringwold and Martin Crossing to the very steep and tortuous Dover Castle Hill.
- A 43.75-mile road climbing the always rough St Martin's Hill out of Dover and dropping tortuously into Folkestone, then over Sandgate Hill by a long steep descent to Hythe and the dead-level crossing of Romney Marsh through Dymchurch, New Romney and Brookland to Rye, a very steep ascent to Winchelsea, and Icklesham, Guestling and White Hart Hill before the long fall into Hastings.
- The 36.75-mile coast road by St Leonards, Bopeep, Bexhill, Little-common and Pevensey — the Bexhill to Pevensey stretch is always very loose and shingly and scarcely rideable — then inland by Polegate, Wilmington, Selmeston and Beddingham to Lewes and over Falmer to Brighton.
- Follows the Brighton road for 12.5 miles to Pevensey, then goes through Westham-street and over the level crossing at Pevensey Station, with a long easy ascent and an easy decline past the cemetery into Eastbourne — 17 miles over a rough heavy surface, particularly in dry weather.
- The book's recommended 61-mile line, leaving the Brighton road at Purley for Kenley, Caterham and Godstone, then Blindley-heath, Felbridge and East Grinstead, a long almost continuous climb through Forest-row to Wytch Cross in Ashdown Forest with its loose sandy surface, and on by Maresfield, Uckfield, East Hoathly, the Dicker Potteries, Hailsham and Polegate over Ocklynge Hill into Eastbourne.
- A 15.5-mile road by Ashurstwood, Forest-row, Shepherdshill, Hartfield and Withyham to Groombridge, where the very long, steep and tedious Top Hill is climbed past the church before excellent-surfaced running by Langton Green and Rusthall down across the common into Tunbridge Wells.
- A 16.75-mile route by Felbridge and a winding lane to Crawley-down, crossing the railway on the level twice at Rowfant Station, then by Poundhill and Three Bridges to Crawley and West Green, over a rather steep rise to the top of Goffs Hill, and past Roughey and Star-row to Horsham Carfax.
- Branches off the Hastings road at Bromley-common for Keston Mark, Holwood Park and Leaves Green, then Cudham and the exceedingly steep, always very rough Betsoms Hill descent — with an awkward right-hand bend in its steepest part — into Westerham, continuing by Kent Hatch, Crockham Hill, Edenbridge, Cowden-pound and Hartfield across Ashdown Forest to Maresfield and Eastbourne.
- A 12.5-mile road following the Eastbourne road to Cowden-pound, then by Markbeech and Chiddingstone Hoath, skirting Stonewall Park, and dropping past Smartshill by a rather steep slope with an awkward bend to a bridge before a rapid climb to Fordcomb and the run in through Langton Green and Rusthall.
- An 8.5-mile road west from Edenbridge Town Hall, level then dropping sharply to Haxted Mill and rising gradually to Lingfield, after which it is nearly all uphill for 2.5 miles to the steep and generally rough top of Baldwins Hill, then over the railway bridge into East Grinstead on an uneven, rough surface.
- A 65.25-mile alternative taking the Hastings road to Tunbridge, climbing Quarry Hill through Southborough to Tunbridge Wells and the very steep, tortuous, loose-surfaced Frant Hill, then following telegraph poles by Mark Cross to Mayfield, Butchers Cross and Cross-in-Hand and down past Horeham Road Station and Hellingly to Lower Horsebridge.
- The 49.75-mile direct line — 1.25 miles shorter than by Uckfield — following the East Grinstead and Eastbourne road to Wytch Cross, then over a loose surface by Charlwood Gate to Danehill, Sheffield Green and Chailey Corner, across Chailey common and by long slopes to the level crossing at Cooksbridge Station and Offham.
- A 51-mile road following the East Grinstead and Eastbourne route to Uckfield, where a rather steep descent to the station and level crossing is followed by a stiff slope, then easy rises and falls to Little Horsted and a practically level three miles before a sharp fall to Cliff and the crossing of the Ouse into Lewes.
- Nine miles down the short but very steep School Hill to the Ouse at Cliff, then a long steady ascent and matching descent to Beddingham, a short steep drop past the church to Tarring Neville, and a tortuous, rather hilly but easy-gradient road of loose surface joining the Newhaven road for Seaford.
- A 10.5-mile road by Southover, Iford and Rodmell, with a stiff descent and rise at Southease and almost level running to Piddinghoe, then steeply down Newhaven High Street to the Bridge Hotel, over the river and level crossings, and past the Buckle Inn on a loose shingly surface to Seaford.
- A 24.5-mile road following the Hastings route for 20 miles to Ninfield, then a good run down and sharp ascent to Catsfield, and a generally very rough mile of decline before the road climbs alongside the boundary wall of Battle Abbey into Battle.
- Runs from London Bridge along the wood- and granite-paved Borough High Street to the Elephant and Castle — called a dangerous crossing for cyclists because of the converging tramways — then by Walworth Road, Camberwell, Denmark Hill and Red Post Lane to Dulwich, through a toll-gate past Dulwich College and up College Road to Crystal Palace, whose nearly mile-long curving Park Road descent the book warns against taking at speed, finishing through Penge to Beckenham.
- The 52-mile favourite Brighton road by the Borough, Kennington, Brixton Hill, Streatham, Thornton-heath and Croydon to Purley, Coulsdon, Hooley and Merstham, then Redhill, Earlswood Common, Horley Chequers, Povey Cross and Crawley to Pease Pottage Green and the steep, generally rough Handcross Hill, continuing over Bolney common, Hickstead, Sayers-common and the trying but rideable Dale Hill to Piecombe, Patcham and Brighton.
- A 17.75-mile road by East Croydon Station, Addiscombe and Ashburton Roads to Woodside — where the tramline is described as dangerous, projecting above the road level — then Elmers End, Beckenham, Shortlands and a very steep tortuous climb to Bromley, on by Widmore and the long steep hill to Chislehurst common, past the Prince Imperial Memorial Cross, and through Perry-street, Sidcup, Bexley and Crayford to Dartford.
- Thirteen miles from Croydon High Street past the Red Deer Inn, with a long steep climb to Sanderstead and steady rising by Upper Warlingham and Worms Heath to the top of Botley Hill at six miles, where a direction post and danger board mark the turn for a gradual then steeper awkwardly bending descent to Westerham.
- Follows the Westerham road for nine miles, then descends Titsey Hill — a very steep and treacherous drop nearly a mile long, loose and rutty with a sharp bend at the foot — to Titsey and Limpsfield, climbs to Kent Hatch and drops by Crockham Hill to Edenbridge, 17 miles.
- A 26.5-mile road down Crown Hill and by Waddon, Beddington, Wallington and Carshalton to Sutton, Cheam and Ewell Station, joining the Dorking road for Epsom, then Ashtead to the very narrow, traffic-blocked Leatherhead, a very steep hill at the Rising Sun Inn (avoidable by Fetcham), and Great Bookham, Effingham, East Horsley and Merrow into Guildford.
- An 11.5-mile road following the Guildford route to Cheam, then turning at the cross-roads for Cheam-common and the Victoria Inn, with a good run down to Worcester Park Station, level going to the Norbiton Park Hotel at New Malden, and rough macadam from Norbiton into Kingston.
- An 11.5-mile alternative descending Crown Hill and running almost level with an excellent surface across Mitcham common to the White Hart Inn, then over the Wandle past Mitcham Station and Morden to the Grove Hotel at Merton, where the London road is joined for Kingston.
- Takes the Redhill and Brighton road for 18.75 miles to Merstham, then bears right at Gatton Corner where the road climbs for a mile by three short steep rises with intermediate falls before descending gradually into Reigate, 21.75 miles over a good gravel surface that turns rough in dry weather.
- A 6.5-mile road turning at the Red Lion Inn and running chiefly downhill to Lower Beeding, where the Plough Inn is followed by a short steep hill and an immediate sharp rise, then undulating to the Horsham road junction and falling gradually through Crabtree to Cowfold.
- An 86-mile cross-country road by Falmer to Lewes, then Shortgate, Blackboys, Cross-in-Hand, Heathfield, Burwash and Etchingham to Hurstgreen, down the steep, narrow, winding and often loose Kings Hill to Hawkhurst, on by Cranbrook, Sissinghurst, Biddenden, Smarden, Pluckley and the very steep, rough Charing Hill, then Challock Lees, Chilham and Chartham into Canterbury and the Margate road.
- A 36.75-mile alternative to Route 63 that avoids the shingle between Bexhill and Pevensey, going by Lewes, Laughton and the Dicker Potteries to Lower and Upper Horsebridge, then Magham Down and Gardner-street over the top of Windmill Hill for a long decline steepening through Boreham-street to Ninfield, and by Lunsfords Cross and Sidley Green to Bopeep, St Leonards and Hastings, the surface generally loose.
- Eight miles of very exposed and open but generally fair road east from Brighton by Kemp Town and the golf links, with a final steep rise and sharp descent into Rottingdean, a long rather steep and loose climb out of it, and further rises and falls by Porto Bello coastguard station before the steepening drop into Newhaven.
- Eleven miles along the coast by Portslade-by-Sea, Southwick and Kingston over an uneven macadam surface with a few sharp rises and falls, crossing the New Shoreham suspension bridge for a toll of 2d. including the machine, then almost dead level by South Lancing to Worthing.
- A 53-mile Brighton road leaving Handcross by the left fork for a sharp descent to Staplefield Green, then the long ascent of Holmstead Hill to Slough Green and Whitemans Green, down to Cuckfield and up to Ansty Cross, on by St Johns-common and Stonespound to Clayton, and up the steep Clayton Hill to the top of the South Downs for the run down to Brighton.
- A 32.5-mile road through Broadstreet, Haywards-heath, Scaynes-hill and Chailey Corner to Newick and Maresfield, then very steeply through Buxted to Hadlow-down, Cross-in-Hand, Heathfield, Cade-street, Punnetts Town, Woods Corner and Netherfield — the book does not recommend it, the road beyond Heathfield being very rough and hilly with descents that need careful riding.
- A 52.75-mile route by Kennington, Stockwell, Clapham common, Balham and Tooting to Mitcham and Sutton, then Belmont and Banstead Downs — very loose and shingly and almost unrideable in dry weather — and Burgh-heath and Tadworth before the very steep, tortuous upper descent of Reigate Hill with its stone-paved cartway, continuing by Woodhatch and Sidlow Bridge to rejoin the Redhill road at Povey Cross.
- A 24.5-mile road taking the Reigate route to Tadworth, then rising steadily across the exposed open downs and Walton heath to Pebble Combe and the exceedingly steep, awkwardly winding and always rough stony descent of Pebble Hill, past Betchworth Station and Betchworth to Box Hill Bridge and Dorking.
- Turns off at Horley Chequers for Horley Station, Black Corner and Poundhill, then Norfolk-arms and Balcombe-church, a long rough rather steep descent into the Ouse valley followed by a long tedious climb to Haywards-heath, and on by Wivelsfield to Ditchling and Clayton Hill — picturesque but, the book says, not recommended as a through route.
- A 51.75-mile variant following the Ditchling route to Balcombe-church, then bearing right past Balcombe Station for a good run down and a succession of long easy slopes and a steady ascent to Whitemans Green, with a gradual decline into Cuckfield on a fair surface that is loose in dry weather.
- A 56-mile road by Westminster Bridge Road, Clapham, Tooting, Merton and Morden to Ewell, Epsom, Ashtead and the narrow traffic-blocked Leatherhead, then Mickleham, Burford-bridge and Dorking, Holmwood, Beare Green, Capel and Kingsfold to Horsham, Southwater and Ashington, and a stiff winding mile-long ascent to the top of the South Downs at Washington before Finden, Offington Corner and Broadwater.
- A nine-mile route the book calls more pleasant and easier than the main road by Balham and Tooting, starting in Abingdon Street between the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey and running along Millbank past Lambeth and Vauxhall Bridges over rough macadam and short lengths of cobble paving, then over the Victoria Suspension Bridge to Battersea and its tramlines.
- From Hyde Park Corner by Knightsbridge and Brompton Roads through Chelsea, Walham Green and Fulham, over Putney Bridge and up the steep but smooth-surfaced Putney Hill, then level past Tibbet's Corner between Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common to the Dog and Fox Inn at Wimbledon.
- Runs from Hyde Park Corner over Hammersmith Bridge and across Barnes Common on very uneven macadam, then through Roehampton and over Putney Heath by the windmill to Wimbledon, down the steep curved Wimbledon Hill and past Morden Hall to Mitcham station and Sutton.
- Leaves Horsham Carfax by East Street for Mannings Heath, then a long gradual decline through Crabtree to Cowfold on a road that goes loose in dry weather, and by Corner-house and Crouch-hill Gate to Henfield, where it joins Route 135 for Brighton.
- Goes out by West Street and a long stiff slope past the Black Horse Hotel to Partridge Green, then over the railway bridge on a very good undulating road with a few sharp rises and descents through Ashurst to Steyning, joining the Shoreham road for Brighton.
- North from Worthing Town Hall through Broadwater and round Broadwater Green, then a straight and almost level 4.5 miles to Round Stone Level Crossing, a rather steep rough drop to Angmering and the Lamb Inn, and on by Hammerpot and Crossbush to descend Causeway Hill into Arundel.
- Follows the Angmering road as far as Round Stone Level Crossing, then crosses the railway and runs level and good past Angmering station, East Preston church and West Preston, and through Rustington into Littlehampton by East Street and High Street.
- Leaves the Worthing road beyond Kingsfold for Warnham and Broadbridge Heath, then a straight, slightly descending run through Five Oaks, Billingshurst and Adversane to a steep winding drop into Pulborough, over the Arun by a steep narrow bridge to Watersfield and Bury Hill, and past Whiteways Lodge to Arundel and Littlehampton.
- Takes the eastward road past the church over the railway to Coneyhurst and Cootham, crossing the London and Worthing road to West Grinstead station, then by Cowfold and Bolney with a stiff rise to Ansty Cross before a 0.75-mile climb to Cuckfield on good gravel and flint surface.
- Follows the Cuckfield road for six miles then turns south through West Grinstead, Partridge Green, Corner-house and Crouch-hill Gate to Albourne and the narrow, tortuous and bumpy streets of Hurstpierpoint, on by Keymer, Ditchling and Westmeston along the foot of the South Downs, and up the steep White Hill into Lewes.
- Runs south to Newbridge and over the river and canal to Wisborough Green, then a hilly, rough and loose stretch by Amblehurst and Strood Green past the Fox Inn, before a gradual descent and sharp rise to join the London road into Petworth by East Street.
- Crosses Littlehampton Harbour by small boat (3d. with a bicycle, 6d. with a tricycle), then over the very loose and heavy going of Climping Common to Yapton, under the railway at Barnham Junction and through Westergate and Oving on a good level flint road into Chichester.
- Follows the Arundel road to Whiteways Lodge, then down the long rideable hill known as Fair Mile Bottom and across Slindon Common past Slindon Park gates to Balls Hut Inn, falling gently to Eastergate and Westergate and over two level crossings by South Bersted into Bognor.
- Takes the Portsmouth road to Milford, then rises stiffly to Witley and falls to North Bridge and Chiddingfold before the steep, always very rough descent of Cripple Crouch Hill to Fisher Street and North Chapel, a fine run down into Petworth, and the half-mile steep rough climb of Duncton Hill before Halnaker and Chichester.
- Leaves the east corner of Chiddingfold green by the left-hand road over a very steep dip to a stream, then loose undulations to Plaistow, where the road turns abruptly past the Sun Inn, followed by a fine 1.5-mile downhill run past the Half Moon Inn to Kirdford and Wisborough Green, and by Newbridge with a short steep ascent into Billingshurst.
- Follows the Brighton road to Fittleworth, then a steep rough hill down to Lower Fittleworth and a long easy rise on a very indifferent but improving surface to Bury, where it keeps right along the main road and joins Route 105 into Arundel.
- Out by Sadlers Row and Pound Street through Tillington with a short steep fall to Halfway Bridge by the George and Dragon Inn, then a narrow but fairly level way through Selham and South Ambersham with a sudden steep descent to a stream, past West Lavington church to the Greyhound Inn where the Midhurst road is joined for Cocking and Chichester.
- East by Westhampnett and Maudlin to Balls Hut Inn and over Slindon Common, climbing steadily to Whiteways Lodge before the awkward bends of Houghton Hill, then over the Arun causeway at Amberley station and long steep undulations to Storrington, joining Route 143 for Brighton.
- From Milford past Lee Park, Brookstreet and Grayswood to Haslemere, then over Friday Hill and the steep 1.5-mile descent into Fernhurst, down nearly a mile to Midhurst past the workhouse and Cowdray Park, and up the long rough climbs of Cocking Hill and Budds Hill before Singleton, West Dean and Mid Lavant into Chichester; the book warns the Godalming-Haslemere gradients are very trying southbound.
- Takes the station road downhill to Lion Green and a further steep drop to the railway bridge at Shottermill, then the steep and very rough ascent of Hammer Hill to the loose undulating going of Linchmere Common, ending with an easy climb under the railway and a good run into Liphook.
- Leaves the city by East Street and the Hornet, turning at the Four Chesnuts Inn and crossing the railway on a tortuous but level road, loose and dusty in dry weather, to the Nelson Inn and over the canal, then past the level crossing at South Bersted into Bognor High Street.
- Along the Esplanade and King's Road on rough bumpy surface through Hove and Portslade, over Old Shoreham Bridge where an inclusive toll of 2d. is levied on cyclists, then by North Lancing, Sompting and Broadwater Green to Offington Corner, up the long stiff Hammerpot Hill and down Causeway Hill to Arundel, and on over Avisford and Crocker Hills past Balls Hut Inn to Chichester.
- From Westminster Bridge by Kennington and Clapham Common, down the steep uneven East Hill at Wandsworth and over Putney Heath to Kingston, Esher and Ripley, then Guildford, Godalming and Milford over Hind Head and the steep rough Cold Ash Hill to Liphook and Petersfield, up Butser Hill and over Portsdown Ridge to Cosham and Portsmouth, with boat fares and times listed for Ryde and West Cowes.
- By Knightsbridge and Kensington Gore to Hammersmith Bridge, then along the river bank through Mortlake and East Sheen to the Black Horse Inn, up the long gradual Queen's Road to Richmond Hill, and a rather steep rough drop past the Star and Garter Hotel to Petersham and Kingston.
- Reaches Merton by Route 97, then past the Grove Hotel over the level crossing at Lower Merton and under the railway at Raynes Park, a stiff half-mile climb of Coombe Hill followed by a rapid fall, and past Norbiton station and church into Kingston by Eden Street on rough uneven road.
- Follows the Portsmouth road to Wandsworth church, then bears right along Upper Richmond Road past East Putney station and Putney on fair but rather uneven macadam, keeping right at the Black Horse Inn to descend into Richmond by the Greyhound Hotel.
- Named by the book as the best route to Richmond, it goes as for Kingston by Hammersmith and Barnes to Mortlake Green, then turns along Richmond Road past a railway bridge on a level, fair macadam and unmistakable road into Richmond.
- By the main Exeter road to Kew Bridge and the Star and Garter Hotel, over the bridge and along the tram-lined Richmond Road through Kew, then up Hill Street and over Richmond Bridge to Twickenham, and by Heath Road on a good level gravel road past New Hampton to the Red Lion Hotel at Hampton.
- Crosses the Wandle and climbs the steep bumpy East Hill, then past the Victoria Patriotic School and County Prison to Wandsworth Common and Upper Tooting, over Tooting Bec Common to Streatham and up the very steep and rough Central Hill to the Crystal Palace, falling sharply by Anerley and under the railway bridges at Penge to Beckenham.
- Goes by Upper Richmond Road past Putney station and down to Putney High Street, over Putney Bridge which is paved with small setts, then keeps left through Fulham for a quite level but rough-macadam run to Hammersmith Broadway.
- Rises by Surbiton Road and Surbiton Hill Road on good gravel, then winds considerably past the second and third milestones and dips under the railway into Ewell, after which a narrow loose gravelly road and a long rough steep ascent lead to Burgh Heath, joining the main London road at Tadworth for Reigate.
- Follows the Portsmouth road past the Surbiton waterworks reservoirs, then rises steadily by easy gradients on a very good surface to Hook and continues climbing 2.5 miles before moderate undulations and a final short steep rise into the middle of Leatherhead.
- Descends Thames Street and crosses Kingston Bridge on a level but bumpy road to Hampton Court, then past Hampton and the Red Lion Hotel on a loose surface to Sunbury Common, keeping straight at the five roads by the Running Horse Inn over perfectly level but very loose and rough going to Ashford-ford Bridge and Staines.
- Takes the Staines road to Hampton, then turns at the waterworks along a perfectly level and unmistakable road to Sunbury whose surface is only poor in dry weather or after heavy rain, keeping on past the Flower-pot Inn by the road of Route 150 to Chertsey church.
- Down Thames Street and over Kingston Bridge to Hampton Wick, then a level fair road under the railway to Teddington church and on to Twickenham, crossing the railway at the station and running by rather rough road through Isleworth to join the West of England road into Brentford; the book calls it the best Kingston-Brentford route.
- Crosses Esher Green past the church and drops a rather steep hill to the Mole, then dead level and good through Hersham to Walton-on-Thames and over Walton Bridge, by Lower Halliford, Shepperton station and Laleham church on a fair road that is loose and heavy in places into Staines.
- By Shalford and Chilworth to Albury and a long steep climb before Shiere and Gomshall, then down the steep winding and often very rough Coast Hill to Westcott and Dorking, over Box Hill Bridge and past Betchworth and Buckland to Reigate and Redhill, where the station archway is barely wide enough for a tricycle to pass a vehicle, and on by Bletchingley, Godstone, Oxted, Westerham, Riverhead, Seal and Ightham to Wrotham Heath and Maidstone.
- From Shalford by Bramley, Grafham and Alfold Crossways to Bucks Green, then over a stream near Broadbridge Heath that is often flooded two feet deep after heavy rain, through Horsham, Southwater, West Grinstead and Partridge Green to Henfield, and over Shaves Wood and Poynings Cross-roads before the stiff Dale Hill to Piecombe Street for Brighton.
- Runs by Shalford and Wonersh commons to the Grantley Arms at Wonersh, then long hills to Shamley Green and Stroud Common and down into Cranleigh, on by park gates to Ellens Green and Rowhook, where a stiff slope at the Chequers Inn is followed by a long descent to the stream joining the Alfold Crossways road for Broadbridge Heath and Horsham.
- Follows the Brighton road to Alfold Crossways then turns south through Alfold and Loxwood by sharp rises and falls, past the Fox and Hounds Inn and a short steep hill down to the bridge over the Arun at Newbridge, with a short steep rise into Billingshurst and an almost level run by Adversane to Pulborough.
- Recommended by the book as pleasanter than the main road via Godalming and about the same distance, it goes by Shalford and Gosden Common with a stiff half-mile rise to Munstead Heath cross-roads, then a cautious descent and hilly but not difficult going by Hydestile and Hambledon Common to a short steep drop to North Bridge and Chiddingfold.
- Leaves High Street by a steep paved descent to the Wey and turns at St. Nicholas Church into a very narrow road, climbing by long steep slopes past the station to the old toll-house on the Hog's Back at two miles, then undulating to Puttenham cross-roads before a gradual and then steeper curved descent into Farnham on good gravel and flint.
- Takes the Portsmouth road to Milford then a winding but level, good-surfaced road to Elstead, a slight fall to the Wey followed by a steep rough ascent of Charles Hill, a further steep fall to the bridge at Waverley Abbey and a mile-long climb, then a long descent to the level crossing by Farnham station.
- Out by Market Street, Leapale Road and Woodbridge Road over the Wey, then past Fairlands Farm and Littlefield and Clasford commons to Willeygreen and Normandy, through Ash Vale to Frimley and Yorktown, and by Blackwater, Darby Green, Yately and Eversley Cross to Arborfield Cross and Shinfield, entering Reading by Southern Hill and Redlands Road past the Royal Berks Hospital.
- Follows the Reading road to beyond Eversley Cross, then a rather rough descent to Heckfield Bridge and a long rise, very steep and loose towards the top, over Heckfield Heath to the Wellington Monument at Strathfieldsaye, on by Beech-hill, Mortimer and Aldermaston Park to Brimpton, and straight and level over Crookham and Greenham heaths before the steep rough drop of Pile Hill into Newbury.
- Leaves Guildford High Street by Chertsey Street on a paved, rather steep descent, then runs by Stoke, Whitemoor Common, Mayford and New Woking to Ottershaw and Chertsey, finishing along Staines Lane on a loose shingly surface and over the Thames bridge into Staines.
- Runs from Petersfield by Sheet Bridge, Rogate, Terwick and Trotton to Midhurst and Easebourne, crossing Cowdray Park through gates that are generally closed, then by Halfway Bridge, Tillington and Petworth, down the very steep and rough Shimmings Hill to Fittleworth, Stopham and Pulborough, and on by Steyning, Bramber, Old Shoreham and Portslade to the Brighton Aquarium, where tramlines and a very rough sea-front road are met.
- Goes by Langrish and the very steep but well-surfaced Bordean Hill, crosses the London and Gosport road at West Meon Hut (George Inn), then runs almost level past the Jolly Farmer Inn at Hinton-marsh and over Longwood Warren, ending with the rather steep and often rough descent of East Hill into Cheesehill Street, Winchester.
- Leaves Petersfield by Chapel Street and a level crossing for the long winding climb of Stoner Hill, steep in its first part, then continues undulating with a rough surface past Hedge Corner and Ropley to Ropley Dean, where it joins the London to Southampton road for the level run through Bishops Sutton into Alresford.
- Falls gradually from Horndean to Havant over a level crossing, then crosses Hayling Bridge (toll one penny for the machine, rider free) on to a level but often rough and shingly island road through Stoke to West Town, South Hayling; the ferry road to Portsmouth from the south-west corner is noted as extremely rough.
- Follows the Gosport road to Farnham, then climbs a smooth incline to Wrecclesham and runs by the New Inn and Greatham over open heathland on a good gravel surface, joining the main London and Portsmouth road beyond Sheet church for Petersfield and the run down to Victoria Pier, Portsmouth.
- Branches off the Petersfield road just beyond the New Inn, climbs a moderate hill and descends easily to Lindford and Stanford on a good but rather narrow surface, then turns over Passfield Common for the direct undulating road into Liphook (Royal Anchor).
- Climbs out of Farnham by Castle Street past Farnham Castle along the ridge between Hungry Hill and Beacon Hill to Ewshott-street, drops rapidly to Crondall-marsh on a surface that is very heavy in wet weather, then runs by Odiham, North Warnborough and the canal to Hook-common (Dorchester Arms) and into Basingstoke.
- Takes the Exeter road to Kew Bridge and Twickenham, then Hanworth (Brown Bear Inn) and Sunbury-common to Sunbury, where it follows the Thames past a watersplash crossed by a narrow side footbridge, and continues through Lower Halliford and Shepperton (Anchor Inn) to Chertsey Bridge.
- A narrow winding and almost level road by Addlestone, New Haw Bridge, Woodham Grange and Byfleet Corner to Pyrford Green and Pyrford, where a sharp descent leads to several bridges over the river Wey, one very steep up and down, then by Sendmarsh to the London and Portsmouth road for Guildford.
- Leaves Chertsey by Windsor Street on a rather rough road to Thorpe, then a level winding lane past a triangle of trees and lodge-gates over loose sandy heath, improving towards Egham and crossing the railway on the level at the station just before the town.
- Leaves the Exeter road at the Jolly Farmer Inn beyond Bagshot for Frimley, Farnborough and Aldershot, where the surface is rough and much cut up by heavy military traffic, then over Hungry Hill to Farnham, Alton, West Meon, Corhampton, Droxford and Wickham to Fareham and Gosport, crossing to Portsmouth by the Floating Bridge ferry.
- Leaves the direct Exeter road at Hartley Row for Winchfield and a steep canal bridge into Odiham, then turns at Priory Gate and undulates through South Warnborough to Golden Pot on an excellent surface, with a fine gradual downhill run to the old toll-house just short of Alton.
- Follows the Exeter road to Basingstoke, then Popham-lane, Lunways Inn and Kings Worthy into Winchester, and out by Southgate Street past St. Cross, Compton, Otterbourne, Chandlers Ford and Bassett to Southampton, whence boats run from the Quay to West Cowes and Ryde; milestones print "Winton" for Winchester and "Southton" for Southampton.
- Leaves Basingstoke by Hackwood Road and turns uphill at the Hackwood Park lodge gates for Winslade, Herriard and Lasham to Alton, then descends to Selborne with a very sudden bend at the foot, crosses the rough hilly Stares Hill with two awkward bends down to Greatham, and runs by Liss and Sheet into Petersfield.
- Runs out of Basingstoke by Hackwood Road to Cliddesden, then a long and rather severe climb of a mile and a half to the top of Farleigh Hill, easy running down to Nutley and Preston Candover, and a hilly rough-surfaced stretch over Preston Down and Chilton Down to Old Alresford and Alresford.
- Descends Church Street out of Basingstoke and passes under the left-hand railway arch, then undulates with a few steep pitches over Rooks Down past Shothanger Farm and Pitlane to Wolverton Park and Kingsclere, and on over Greenham Heath to the narrow, steep and generally rough descent of Pile Hill into Cheap Street and Northbrook Street, Newbury.
- Branches off the Newbury road at three-quarters of a mile for Sherborne St. John and Pamber Green over an undulating surface rough in places and heavy in wet weather, crosses a watersplash of considerable depth after rain (a narrow footbridge stands at the side), then climbs sharply through Tadley and runs nearly all downhill to Aldermaston.
- Leaves Winchester by Southgate Street past St. Cross and the Bell Inn, crosses the river Itchen at Twyford, and runs on a smooth flint surface by Fishers Pond, Colden-common and Crowdhill to Fairoak, Horton-heath and Boorley Green, with a long gradual descent into Botley.
- The recommended Fareham road, taking the Botley route to Fishers Pond and turning at the Queen's Head Inn for Lower Upham (Alma Inn), then descending to the level crossing at Bishops Waltham station and past the ruined palace into the town, and on by Wickham with a long steep, generally loose rise before Fareham.
- A very hilly road out of Winchester by Cheesehill Street and Bar End, climbing the very steep Bar End Hill and dropping steeply and roughly to Morestead, then down Whiteflood Farm Hill, very steep and rough with a sudden bend at the bottom requiring extreme care, before the long ascent of Stephen's Castle Down and the easy run into Bishops Waltham.
- Follows the Botley road past Twyford, then descends by Allbrook to Eastleigh and Bishopstoke station, runs level beside the railway before crossing it and turning through Swathling, and climbs by Portswood into Southampton where the tramlines begin; the surface is good but rough in dry weather.
- Leaves Winchester by Jewry Street and City Road past the Eagle Hotel, climbs by the Red Deer and Roebuck Inns to Weeke, then runs very up and down past the Rack and Manger Inn to Stockbridge on a stony surface long notorious for its perpetually rough condition; milestones print "Winton" for Winchester and "Sarum" for Salisbury.
- Follows the Lyndhurst road to Redbridge, then turns at the chemical works on to almost level lanes past Nursling station and Nursling village to Lee, running parallel to the railway before joining the main road for the last mile into Romsey.
- Takes the Gosport road to Corhampton, then a long steep climb to Corhampton Down and rough stony open country with long steep rises and falls before the drop into Bishops Waltham, continuing by Botley station, Hedge End and Woolston to the Itchen Ferry for Southampton.
- An up-and-down, rather rough and stony road by Hedge End and Bitterne, with a steep descent from the village to Northam Bridge where a toll of one penny including machine is charged, then over a level crossing and by Northam Road and New Road into Southampton; the Hedge End and Itchen Ferry route is stated to be better.
- Follows the Gosport road to Chawton, then climbs nearly two and a half miles past Medsted station and falls by Ropley Stoke and Bishops Sutton to Alresford on an excellent surface, and continues up the Itchen valley by Itchen Stoke, Itchen Abbas and Martyr Worthy to Kings Worthy, Winchester and Southampton.
- Runs almost level from Chichester by Fishbourne, Nutbourne, Emsworth, Havant and Cosham into Portsmouth on very uneven macadam with tramlines and cobbled edges, crosses by the Floating Bridge to Gosport, then goes by Rowner, Chark Common, Stubbington and Titchfield to Bursledon Bridge (a 2d. toll at the always-closed gate) and the Itchen Ferry for Southampton.
- Turns sharply off the Portsmouth road at the Swan Inn in Cosham and keeps straight and almost level past Wymering and Portchester, skirting Portsmouth Harbour, to Fareham, then rises easily and drops steeply into Titchfield where it rejoins the main South Coast road for Southampton.
- Takes the Exeter and Southampton roads to Winchester, climbs past the West Gate by Romsey Road to Pitt, Hursley and Ampfield, drops sharply to Romsey and up the long steep Pauncefoot Hill, then crosses the New Forest by Ower, Cadnam, Lyndhurst, Bank and Holmsley station to Christchurch, Iford, Pokesdown and Boscombe; the forest roads are exceedingly loose and heavy but are being repaired by the County Council.
- Bears off the Southampton road at Red Lodge nursery and descends by the pumping-station and St. James's Church to the Crown Hotel at Shirley, then by Park Street, Regent's Park Road and Millbrook to Redbridge and Totton on a generally loose or heavy surface; the note warns it is not preferable to the main road by Romsey.
- Climbs past Romsey cemetery and rises for three miles to Chilworth, crosses the London and Southampton road diagonally at Bassett and descends to Swathling and the river Itchen, then a short but very steep hill to West End, and undulates by Botley, Botley station, Shidfield and Wickham to join the Gosport road for Fareham.
- Crosses the river Test out of Romsey by Bell Street and Middlebridge Street and climbs nearly two miles to Buck Hill, whose steep and generally rough descent leads to Sherfield, then a short steep rise to Cowesfield Green and an easy run to Whiteparish and Brickworth, where the Southampton to Salisbury road is joined.
- Runs quite straight and almost level to Lyndhurst Road station on a surface loose and heavy in dry weather, then over the level crossing and up a long easy hill to Longdown-hill, Twiggs-lane and Marchwood-road, joining the Southampton road at Dibden schools for Hythe Pier.
- Descends from Lyndhurst church chiefly downhill to Brockenhurst Bridge and Brockenhurst on a very good surface, then undulates to Hoblers Corner where the Ringwood road joins and drops into Lymington, whose paved stone crossings need care at night; the London and South Western boats cross to Yarmouth about five times a day, the pier being reachable only by train.
- Climbs past the Swan Inn and Emery-down, then a steady ascent of nearly a mile and a half to Bolderwood followed by a steep descent and long climb to Bratley Plain on the London and Bournemouth road, and on past Picket Post with an almost continuous descent into Ringwood; the surface is a little rough, particularly in dry weather.
- Runs by Basingstoke, Winchester and Ower to the Sir John Barleycorn Inn at Cadnam, then over increasingly hilly ground with several steep rises and falls by Stony Cross and Picket Post to Ringwood, and on by Sopley, Staplecross and Purewell to Christchurch and Bournemouth; the Cadnam to Ringwood stretch was until recently very rough for cycling.
- Leaves Ringwood by Romsey Road with a steady ascent to Picket Post, then branches right through Burley-street and Burley on a fair surface broken by rough patches and several short steep pitches, joining the Lyndhurst road at Hoblers Corner for the run into Lymington.
- Leaves the Weymouth road four and a half miles beyond Ringwood and descends to Longham (King's Arms Inn), crossing the river Stour, then rises to Bear Cross and the Shoulder of Mutton Inn and undulates to Newtown, where a steep rough hill by the Sea View Inn drops to Longfleet and the level crossing into Poole High Street.
- Goes north through Southampton by Above Bar Street and Commercial Road with a tramline in the centre of a narrow rough slope, then by Millbrook station and the Royal Mail Inn to Redbridge and the causeway across the Test to Totton, and by Rumbridge, Hounsdown and Lyndhurst Road station to Lyndhurst, where it joins the London road for Bournemouth.
- Reaches Hythe either by the hourly Town Quay ferry (tricyclists are advised to avoid it) or by road through Totton, Rumbridge, Marchwood and Dibden, then crosses Beaulieu Heath past Hatchet Gate to the Crockford Bridge watersplash, descends the steep loose sandy Walhampton Hill to Lymington Bridge (1d. toll), and runs by Everton, Milton and a foot-deep watersplash to Purewell and Christchurch.
- Follows the Bournemouth road to Totton, then by Netley Marsh and Bartley Corner to Cadnam and over Longcross Plain to Bramshaw Telegraph on a rough heavy surface, dropping steeply into the Avon valley at Fordingbridge, which is often flooded after heavy rain, then by Alderholt and Daggons Road station to the steep abruptly-bending descent of Rooke Hill into Cranborne.
- The direct road, running by Totton, Ower, West Wellow, Plaitford and Landford on an excellent gently undulating surface to Brickworth, where the Romsey road joins, then a steep rough climb and a run down of over a mile to Waddon and Alderbury, ending with a two-mile descent past the goods station into Salisbury by St. Ann Street.
- Leaves the direct road at Landford Rectory for Hamptworth and Redlynch on a good but rather narrow road, then descends into Downton through a chalk cutting that should be ridden cautiously as the foot is often blocked by traffic, and continues by Downton Wick, Charlton, Bodenham and Britford over Harnham Bridge into Salisbury.
- Follows the Cranborne road by Totton and Cadnam to Bramshaw Telegraph, then keeps right over an almost level but rough and heavy surface to Woodfalls and down a long steep hill into Downton; hillier than the Landford road, but its higher ground commands extensive views over the New Forest.
- Undulates pleasantly westward from Cadnam to Brook, up a short steep hill and by Bramshaw with a long gradual descent on a very good surface to Landford Bridge, beyond which it joins the direct Southampton to Salisbury road.
- Takes the Bournemouth road north by Above Bar Street, then bears right along the tramline through Freemantle to Shirley (Crown Hotel) where the tramlines end and the surface improves, and continues over a railway bridge on a good undulating road into Romsey.
- Follows the Exeter road to Salisbury, crosses Harnham Bridge and climbs Harnham Hill (avoidable past Alderbury Union Workhouse) to Combe Bisset, Drove End and Woodyates Inn, then over the very loose Workly Down and past Cashmoor Inn and Thickthorn on stretches so rough as to be scarcely rideable, and on by Tarrant Hinton, Blandford, Puddletown and Dorchester over Ridgway Hill through Broadway and Radipole to the Weymouth Esplanade.
- Leaves Salisbury by Catherine Street and Exeter Street, crosses the Avon and climbs to a short sharp descent at Britford, then runs mostly level on a very good surface by Bodenham, Charlton and Downton Wick, and almost level through Breamore and Burgate to Fordingbridge, Ibsley, Blashford and Ringwood for Christchurch.
- Salisbury by the Weymouth road to Tidpit, Bowridge and Cranborne (Fleur-de-Lis Hotel), then past St. Giles' Park and Horton Inn to Stanbridge and Wimborne Minster, a route cyclists generally avoid because the almost-disused surface degenerates into a rough stony, practically unrideable track for nearly 5 m. north of Cranborne.
- The easier alternative to Route 190, leaving the Weymouth road beyond Combe Bisset for Rockborne, West Park Lodge and Damerham, then very undulating with a final long descent into Cranborne, steep at the top and with some awkward bends.
- Blandford St. Mary, Charlton Marshall and Spettisbury run level beside the railway to Bailey Gate, Corfe Mullen and Wimborne, then by Oakley Bridge, Canford Magna, Bear Cross, Kinson and Riddlesford (Horse & Jockey Inn) to Moordown and Winton, ending in the very steep, uneven macadam descent of Richmond Hill into Bournemouth.
- By Spettisbury, a short steep hill under the railway, Almer (Red Lion Inn) and the entrance gates of Charborough Park to East Morden, then over generally loose open heathland with two steep pitches to the level crossing at Wareham Station and a moderate rise into Wareham.
- A steep climb out of Blandford towards Salisbury, then a series of long steady slopes over the downs to Melbury Down at 9 m., a very rapid devious descent to Melbury church and a steep rough ascent to Shaftesbury, the surface fairly good but liable to considerable variation on so exposed a road.
- Charminster, Stratton, Grimston and Frampton on excellent macadam, then Maiden Newton and a very steep climb to White Sheet Hill, Tollerdown Gate and Winyards Gap, where the road falls rapidly through South Perrott and Misterton to Crewkerne Station and a long gradual slope into the town.
- The direct 20.5 m. road, following Route 194 to Grimston then up a tedious, very steep and rough ascent that becomes scarcely rideable, descending steeply to Holywell (Evershot Station) and skirting Melbury Park past the Welcome and Rest Inn to a final steep drop into Yeovil.
- 130.5 m. by Basingstoke, Winchester, Ower and Ringwood (Crown Hotel), then Wimborne's Poole Corner, Creekmore Bridge, Lytchett Gate and Lytchett Minster, over open heathland to the Wareham Station level crossing, and on through Wool, East Knighton, Warmwell Cross and the steep winding ascent at Osmington to Preston and the Weymouth Bay esplanade.
- Out of Wareham by South St. over the rough r. Frome causeway, with telegraph poles from Stoborough onward, past Norden schoolhouse and up a steep winding hill to Corfe Castle (Bankes Arms Inn), then over the ridge by rutty uneven road to Herston and down into Swanage, whose main street is exceedingly narrow and rough.
- North St. out of Wareham, down to the river bridge and level to Wareham Station, over the level crossing and up a series of long gradual ascents before an easy slope down to Bere Regis (Drax Arms Inn); surface very fair on the whole.
- Along the Esplanade beside Weymouth Bay to Radipole and Broadway, then a steep pitch by Upway church, a very rapid descent through a gate that is generally kept shut, and level going to Martinstown where the Dorchester road (Route 252) carries on to Bridport.
- Up Commercial Road and over Castle Hill to Parkstone and Poole, whose quay is a bad road of raised stone crossings and railway lines, then over Hamworthy Bridge (toll 2d., machine included), by Lytchett Gate and Lytchett Minster to Wareham, and on through Wool, East Knighton, Warmwell Cross, Broadmayne and Whitcombe to Stafford Cross and Dorchester.
- The nearest road at 17.75 m., turning sharply at Parkstone's Sloop Inn for Longfleet (Shah Inn and New Inn), Creekmore Bridge and Upton to Lytchett Gate, then undulating to Bailey Gate — good surface but rough and sandy in dry weather — and level beside the railway through Spettisbury and Charlton Marshall to Blandford.
- Follows the Wareham road to Bakers Arms Inn at Lytchett Minster then keeps straight on past Sleeping Green and Bloxworth (half a mile off the road) with a good straight run down to Bere Regis, a very fair undulating road with no difficult gradients before joining Route 204 for Dorchester.
- Turns off the main road at West Holme over a level crossing and river, rising with abrupt bends across Holme heath to East Lulworth, then very steeply down Broadfield Hill to West Lulworth (Castle Inn), up a long rough climb and through Daggers Gate — where gates are generally closed across the road — to Winfrith, East Knighton's Red Lion Inn and Warmwell Cross.
- 123 m. from Hyde Park Corner, keeping straight on at Wimborne's Poole Corner past the Minster and Three Lions Inn to Corfe Mullen, Bailey Gate and Almer, then more hilly but nothing severe on excellent though often loose surface to Bere Regis, Tolpuddle, Burleston and Puddletown.
- Leaves Wimborne by East Brook and Poole Corner, level to Oakley Bridge then a long easy incline over two railway bridges and declines to Creekmore Bridge, running rough and uneven to Longfleet's New Inn and over a level crossing into Poole, with the Bournemouth branch (9.5 m. in all) turning off at the New Inn for Parkstone.
- The 168.75 m. direct road by Kensington, Hammersmith, Brentford, Hounslow, Staines, Egham Hill, Virginia Water, Bagshot, Blackwater, Hartford Bridge Flats, Basingstoke, Overton, Whitchurch, Andover, Thruxton Hill, Amesbury, Stonehenge, Deptford, Wylye, Hindon, Charnage Hill, Mere, Wincanton, Sparkford, Ilchester, Ilminster, Chard, Yarcombe and Honiton to Heavitree Hill and Exeter, the worst stretch being beyond Stonehenge where the road degenerates into a rough flinty track and the long descent to Deptford needs the greatest care if ridden.
- Narrow and very rough but level to Kew-bridge (Star and Garter Hotel), then along Richmond Road on tramlines across Kew Green, bumpy macadam through Richmond and up Hill St., level past Petersham's park gates and Ham, and under the railway at Kingston station into Eden St.
- 21.75 m. over Staines Bridge by Egham and the rapid mile-long climb of Egham Hill to Virginia Water, Blacknest (Rising Sun Inn), Sunninghill and Ascot, then over Buckhurst Hill to Bracknell and Wokingham, and by King-street and Earley into Reading; surface generally very good but loose in dry weather.
- A 3.75 m. link leaving Staines by Church St. past the G.W. railway station and through a gate often closed across the road, then by Poyle cross-roads to the Punch Bowl Inn where it joins the London and Bath road; practically level throughout with good surface.
- Up Milton Road on good gravel to Billhill at the crossing of the Reading and Windsor road, then mostly downhill to Hurst Green and Whistley Green and level to Twyford station, the book warning that the roads in this locality are a little intricate and may be easily mistaken.
- The Exeter road to Staines, then quite level across Runnymede beside the Thames to the Bells of Ouseley Inn — where the direct riverside road is to be avoided as it is often flooded — and past Old Windsor and the Royal Tapestry Works, crossing the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park into the town.
- 21.5 m. by the Bath road to Langley Broom (King William), skirting Ditton Park to Datchet and over a level crossing, then across Victoria Bridge and through Windsor Home Park before a steep winding granite-paved climb past the Castle into the town.
- Down Thames St. beside the Castle wall, a steep granite-paved descent to the Thames bridge, then almost level over rough macadam through Eton, keeping right just short of the College, and level with fair surface into Slough.
- 6.75 m. by Peascod St. and Clarence Road past the Star and Garter Hotel to St. Stephen's Church at Clewer, where the surface is generally very sandy and loose, then by Bullocks Hatch and Braywick to Maidenhead, entered down Queen St.
- Along St. Leonard's Road past the Cavalry Barracks to Clewer Green and the loose, heavy climb of High Standing Hill, then by Winkfield (Fleur-de-Lis Inn) and Ascot racecourse to Bracknell and Wokingham, and on past a short unrideable pitch to Arborfield Cross, Swallowfield Park and Riseley.
- As Route 215 to Ascot's Royal Ascot Hotel, then descending by easy slopes to the Wells Hotel and up a very stiff rise to cross-roads, over a good undulating road to the Windmill Inn where the London to Basingstoke road is joined for the run down into Bagshot.
- 17.5 m. out of Windsor by Peascod St. and Clarence Road through Dedworth Green and Oakley Green to Fifield, Foxley Green and Touchen End, then by a narrow road to Waltham St. Lawrence and Ruscomb and down a short hill to Twyford on the London and Bath road; good surface but often loose and heavy in dry weather.
- Follows the Basingstoke road to cross-roads near the Squirrel Inn, then keeps straight on through North-street to Winkfield church and Warfield (Plough & Harrow Inn), over the steep Cabbage Hill to Binfield's Standard Inn and Billhill, joining the main Staines and Reading road at King-street for Earley and Reading.
- Leaves Andover by Winchester St. for a steep climb to the top of Clatford Hill, then the very steep and tortuous descent of Wherwell Hill into Wherwell, leaving Chilbolton aside, and rises steadily to the old Roman road at the 7th milestone before a good run down into Winchester past the Eagle Hotel to Jewry St.
- 27.5 m. by Weyhill and Ludgershall over a rough stony road to East and West Everley, then a long steep descent into the Avon valley at Upavon, and by Rushall, Charlton, Conock, Wedhampton and Nursted — passing Stert on the left — to Devizes Market Place.
- Takes the Devizes road to Conock then bears off through Urchfont and Market Lavington on good flint surface, skirting the high table-land of Salisbury Plain by Littleton, Little Cheverell, Erle Stoke and Edington, dropping rapidly to Bratton and Westbury, then Westbury Leigh, Chapmanslade and the rather steep fall of Styles Hill to Frome Station.
- Northward over the railway bridge and across the disused Sarum to Hungerford road to Collingbourn Ducis and Collingbourn Kingston, then good easy running to Burbage cross-roads and Milton and a gentle 3.75 m. decline into Pewsey, the note warning that the direct road via East Everley and the downs is unrideable.
- Westward past Pewsey church and by Manningford Bruce, nearly level with good surface through Rushall, then a gradual rise to Charlton and a fairly good undulating road with a few sharp rises and falls to Conock, whence Route 219 continues to Devizes.
- Leaves the Exeter road for Lattiford, South Cheriton, Horsington and Templecombe — passing under the railway and turning at a conspicuous yew tree — then by Henstridge Ash and Henstridge to Stalbridge's Red Lion, Perry farm and Bagber to Sturminster Newton; excellent surface that turns heavy after rain and very dusty in continued drought.
- Down North St. out of Wincanton and immediately up the very steep Hole Hill with a sharp bend right then left midway, after which it is nearly all downhill for 3 m. and an easy rise to Roundhill cross-roads where the Shaftesbury road joins.
- Level southward for 2 m. then a short rise to Chilthorne (Halfway House Inn) and on to Yeovil Marsh, followed by a long winding hill of no great steepness but rather rough surface, then undulating and level before an easy decline into Yeovil.
- Quite level towards Exeter to Cart Gate Inn (which has ceased to exist as an inn), then by the Fleur de Lis Inn at Stoke-under-Ham over a river bridge and down a steep hill past Bow Mills, rising for 1.5 m. before a rather steep drop into Crewkerne; good surface but rough in dry weather.
- The shortest road by nearly a mile though more hilly than via Lopen, leaving by East St. and the White Horse Inn down a narrow, often rough descent with awkward bends to Kingstone, then a tortuous but well signposted road to the steep but good-surfaced climb of St. Reine Hill and a run down to Roundham where the Chard road joins.
- Follows the Yeovil road to Lopen Head (Powlett's Arms Inn) then turns sharply down a long steep hill into Lopen, level and a short steep ascent to Merriott — where there are some dangerous sewer gratings — and a rather steep fall to Crewkerne Market Place on smooth surface.
- Leaves Chard by Holyrood St. and the church, undulating and chiefly rising for a mile before a good run down to Tatworth and a moderate climb to Tytherleigh, just beyond which comes the very steep and rough descent of Tytherleigh Hill.
- Leaves Crewkerne by the Chard and Exeter road as far as the fork on White Down, then takes a narrow, rough, chiefly downhill lane through Perry Street to join the Chard–Axminster road at Tytherleigh for the run into Axminster.
- Follows the Axminster road out of Chard to the fork below the Trout Inn, then climbs a long hill, steep in parts, to Hunter's Lodge Inn and runs down to the 80-yard Charmouth tunnel, lit by oil lamps at night, beyond which the descent into Charmouth becomes exceedingly steep and rough.
- A road the book expressly does not recommend, crossing Balay Down and dropping nearly two miles to Longbridge before the very steep mile-long climb of Stockland Hill and a circuitous fall on very rough flinty stone to the main London and Exeter road short of Honiton.
- Turns off by the old toll-house west of Honiton for the tedious mile-and-a-half climb of Gittisham Hill, rough-surfaced towards the top, then falls almost continuously for two and a half miles to Sidbury and on through Sidford by the Rising Sun Inn to Sidmouth Market Place.
- The 169¾-mile trunk road from Hyde Park Corner by Basingstoke, Popham Lane, Sutton Scotney and the almost unrideable stony stretch beyond Stockbridge to Lobcomb Corner and Salisbury, then Wilton, Fovant, Shaftesbury, Milborne Port, Sherborne, Babylon Hill, Yeovil, Hendford Hill, Crewkerne and Chard.
- Runs up the Wylye valley by Wilton, Stapleford, Steeple Langford, Deptford, the two Codfords, Heytesbury and Warminster, then down the narrow winding three-quarter-mile descent of Black Dog Hill to Beckington and Woolverton before the steep tortuous drop from Limpley Stoke Hill into Bath, whose streets are paved with wood.
- Follows the Exeter road to Barford, then keeps straight on through Hurdcott Plantation, where the surface is soft and heavy, and by Teffont and a steep rough ascent to Chilmark, Fonthill and Berwick St. Leonards, entering Hindon by a very abrupt turn to the left.
- Leaves Salisbury by Castle St. and climbs a long hill, steep near the top, to Old Sarum, then rises and falls across the downs on a surface generally loose on the hills before a steep winding descent into Amesbury.
- Described as a bad road for cycling: from Shaftesbury past the Glyn Arms up the long tortuous climb of Zigzag Hill, then through three usually closed gates at Tollard Green to Tollard Farnham, Thickthorn cross-roads, Horton Inn and the very bad narrow surface at Three Cross before running down into Ringwood.
- The book's preferred road south, dropping by a very narrow steep descent with an awkward mid-way bend, then winding round the base of Melbury Hill to Compton Abbas, Fontmell, Sutton Waldron, Iwerne Minster and between Steepleton and Ranston Parks to Steepleton Corner and Blandford.
- Leaves Shaftesbury by Bimport St. and descends St. John's Hill, an exceedingly steep and quite unrideable gradient, then passes through gates onto St. James's Common and runs by Hartgrove, the Plough Inn and Manston to cross the r. Stour at the Bull Inn below Sturminster Newton.
- Falls very steeply from Shaftesbury by Bleke St. and New Road to Gillingham, then by Wyke to Hunter's Lodge Inn, Charlton Musgrove and Redlinch, down a narrow tortuous hill into Bruton and up steep Coombe St., and on by Milton Clevedon, Evercreech, Prestleigh Hill and Cannard's Grave.
- Takes the Shepton Mallet road as far as Gillingham, then turns off by the church on a level but rather rough lane through Milton to cross the main Exeter and London road at right angles, turning right for the better-surfaced undulating run into Mere.
- Runs south-east by Alweston, Caundle Marsh and a steep pull to Bishops Caundle, then through Blackmoor Vale and over the bumpy surface of Lydlinch Common to Sturminster Newton, Shillingstone and Durweston, finishing with the short but steep ascent of White Cliff Hill into Blandford.
- Climbs West Hill out of Sherborne to Longburton and Middlemarsh, then makes a long and very steep rough ascent from Lions Gate to Dogbery Gate, falling to Minterne and Cerne Abbas and running by Godmanstone and Charminster into Dorchester.
- Goes west down Green Hill into Marston Road, drops a very steep hill just past a wayside inn to Marston Magna, then takes a winding road through Bridgehampton across the main Exeter and London road to Puddimore, where it joins the London–Taunton road for Langport.
- Reckoned preferable to the direct road: it descends steeply to Adber, runs level by Hummer and Mudford and takes a winding but almost dead-level lane to Ilchester, crossing the Fossway and turning at Load Bridge for Long Sutton and Langport.
- Leaves Yeovil up the steep Hendford Hill, then by Ryme and Yetminster to Leigh and Totnell Corner, climbing High Stoy by a series of stiff rough slopes to Dogbery Gate and Minterne, where the road is often heavy owing to the sheltering trees, before joining Route 243 for Dorchester.
- Climbs Princes St. past the hospital out of Yeovil, then drops the steep and awkwardly winding Vagg Hill to Chilthorne Domer, running by Tintinhull Forks, Ash and Stapleton cross-roads to Long Load, Load Bridge and Long Sutton.
- Runs south-east past Crewkerne Station and down a short steep hill into Misterton, then by Mosterton to the 150-yard lamp-lit Beaminster tunnel, from which a rapid loose-surfaced descent leads into Beaminster, and so by Melplash and Bradpole to Bridport.
- Takes the Bridport road out of the Square for 150 yards, then rises on a rather rough surface to the very severe ascent of Hackthorn Hill, crosses Tollerdown Gate and drops to Benville Lane before a long rise and steep fall to Evershot and a gradual descent to Holywell by Evershot Station.
- Climbs Clan Hill west of Beaminster, whose western descent towards Broadwinsor is very steep, rough and almost unrideable, then continues on poor surface by Birdsmoorgate and Marshallsay to Hunters' Lodge Inn, from which a long hill, steep in parts, falls into Axminster.
- Warned as crossing low-lying moors often flooded in winter, it runs from Crewkerne through Merriott, where there are dangerous sewer-gratings, then by Lopen Head, West Lambrook, Kingsbury, Thorney and Muchelney to the very steep Langport Hill, and on over White Hill, Aller, Othery, Middlezoy and Westonzoyland.
- Follows the direct Exeter road to Andover, then leaves by Bridge St. over the level crossing and runs by Little Ann and Middle Wallop on a loose stony surface needing careful riding to Lobcomb Corner, where it joins the main Salisbury and Exeter road.
- Runs by Martinstown, Steepleton and Winterborne Abbas over the downs, then down the very steep, tortuous and rough Blue Ball Hill into Bridport, over Chideock Hill and Morcombe Lake to Charmouth and the mile-long rough descent into Lyme Regis, then Colyford, Trow Hill, Sidford, Four Elms Hill, Newton Poppleford and Aylesbeare Hill.
- With Route 206 the easiest way to Exeter: a very steep climb through Charmouth to the 80-yard oil-lit Charmouth tunnel, then a continuous fall past Hunters' Lodge Inn to Axminster, the short steep pull up Gammons Hill to Kilmington Cross, and Wilmington before the mile-long steep rough descent of New Inn Hill.
- Ascends the steep rough hill through Colyford and takes a very winding road to Seaton, then climbs tortuously before a very rapid descent into Beer, and by Bovey House rejoins the Dorchester–Exeter road at Trow for the steep tortuous drop down Trow Hill to Sidford.
- Route 254. Lyme Regis to Exeter (Via Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, and Exmouth) (opens in a new tab)Branches off at the foot of Trow Hill and runs down past Sid Abbey into Sidmouth, then up the quite unrideable Peak Hill to Otterton, Kersbrook and the steep awkward Surgery Hill into Budleigh Salterton, over Knowle Hill to Exmouth, and by Lympstone, Exton, Ebford and Topsham Bridge into Exeter.
- A short link taking Church St. and Station Road out of Sidmouth on a long gradual ascent past the railway station, then almost level to Bowde where it joins the main Lyme Regis road for Exeter.
- Branches from the London and Exeter road beyond Sparkford, crosses the Roman Fossway to Long Sutton and Huish, drops the very steep Langport Hill into Langport and over the r. Parret, then runs by Curry Rivel, Wrantage, Mattock Tree and Thorn Falcon into Taunton.
- Leaves Langport by Bow St. across the r. Parret and rises over the railway to Curry Rivel, then turns at the Bell Inn for Hambridge and Westport, climbs a stiff slope to Puckington, and finishes with a steep descent and an awkward bend down Silver St. into Ilminster.
- Runs east from Taunton by East Reach, Thorn Falcon and Mattock Tree to Hatch Inn, then by Ashill and Horton to Ilminster, and on through Whitelackington, Lopen Head, Watergore and Petherton Bridge to Stoke-under-Ham, Montacute and Preston.
- Follows the Yeovil road to Horton, then climbs at a moderate gradient past the Lamb Inn and runs down to Donyatt, passing under the railway to join the main London and Exeter road for Chard.
- Leaves Taunton by High St. and Shuttern past the Shire Hall to Trull, then climbs the steep but nearly all rideable Blagdon Hill and keeps a rough level ridge to Churchingford before a very rapid fall to Upottery and the r. Otter, joining the Chard road near Applins, known locally as Blue Doors.
- Turns off the Exeter road at Stonehenge and crosses Salisbury Plain by Maddington, Chitterne All Saints and Chitterne St. Mary, dropping the wretchedly stony Anstrors Hill to Heytesbury and Warminster, then by Corsley Heath and Frome to Nunney, Doulting, Shepton Mallet, Pilton, Glastonbury, Street and the Polden Hills to Bridgwater.
- Avoids the town of Frome by entering Longleat Park at the lodge-gate, running past Longleat House and County Cottage and out by Bunns Lane to Truddoxhill and Nunney, a pleasanter road that shortens the distance by half a mile.
- Uses the same Longleat Park road but bears right at County Cottage over a long hill to the exit gate, then by East Woodlands and Blatchbridge, where floods often make the road impassable in very wet weather, into Frome, adding 1¾ miles to the direct distance.
- Warns that milestone and direction-post distances on it are misleading; it runs by Sutton Veny, Longbridge Deverill and Maiden Bradley to Yarnfield, then over the rough flinty top of Druley Hill for a nearly mile-long descent to North Brewham and Bruton, where it joins the Frome to Taunton road.
- Goes out by Weymouth St. over Warminster Common and Crockerton to Longbridge Deverill, then takes an extremely hilly road with very rough stony surface over the downs past Pertwood, crossing the London and Exeter road, with a very steep descent to East Knoyle and a gated climb above Semley Station.
- Runs south from Frome through Blatchbridge, often flooded in winter, and skirts Longleat Woods on a long tedious climb to Maiden Bradley, then by Kilmington, Stourton, Milton and Gillingham to East Stower, Todbere, Manston, Fontmell Parva and Child Okeford, finishing over Steepleton Corner, Stourpaine and White Cliff Hill.
- Climbs Keyford St. out of Frome to Nunney and Wanstrow, falls two miles into Bruton, then rises past Old Elm to Castle Cary and runs by Alford and East Lydford, crossing the Fossway at the Cross Keys Inn, to Keinton Mandeville, Kingweston, Somerton and Langport.
- Leaves Frome by Christchurch St. West and Vallis Way, drops a long hill to Murtry and climbs steeply through Buckland, then by Lyswater and Ferry Hill cross-roads to the Fir Tree Inn at Writhlington, where a tramway crosses the road at the head of the mile-long steep and rough descent into Radstock.
- Takes the Castle Cary and Taunton road as far as the cross-roads three and a half miles beyond Bruton, then keeps straight forward for a rapid descent to Galhampton where the Shepton Mallet and Castle Cary road is joined for Yeovil.
- Leaves Somerton past the Red Lion Inn and descends rather steeply to the bridge over the r. Cary, then runs by Littleton and Compton and up a steady rise to Marshals Elm on the crest of the Polden Hills, falling quickly to a level road through Street into Glastonbury.
- Rises from Shepton Mallet High St. to Cannards Grave and Prestleigh Hill, then runs by Evercreech Junction Station, Arthur's Bridge and Castle Cary Station into Castle Cary, and on through Galhampton, Sparkford, Queen Camel, Marston Magna and Mudford to a long gradual slope into Yeovil.
- Follows the Yeovil route to Castle Cary, then climbs rapidly past the Waggon and Horses Inn to the top of Cary Hill and declines three miles to Hadspen House lodge, rising again to Jack White's Gibbet and passing Holbrook House before a long, mid-way very steep run down into Wincanton.
- Runs by Cannards Grave and over Beard Hill, whose southern descent is rather steep with loose stony surface, then past Pylle Station and down the very tortuous, rough and steep Wraxall Hill to join the perfectly straight Fossway for East Lydford and Northover.
- Leaves Glastonbury by Magdalene St. and Fisher's Hill and crosses the moor, then climbs the short but very steep Maidments Hill above Butleigh Wooton to Butleigh, and continues past Kingweston to Charlton Mackarell, Lytes Cary and Northover.
- Continues from Shepton Mallet through Croscombe and Dulcot to Wells and the Cathedral Green, then by Westbury, Rodney Stoke, Cheddar and Axbridge over Shutshelf Hill to Sidcot and Woodborough, down a very steep hill through Banwell, and by Knightcot and Locking across the moor to Weston-super-Mare.
- The nearest but not the best road, going by Coxley to Glastonbury, then Street, Walton, Pipers Inn, Pedwell and Greinton before a rough, level and very monotonous crossing of Sedgemoor by Othery, Boroughbridge, East and West Lyng and Durston to Bathpool.
- Turns off the Weston-super-Mare road for Wookey, Yarley and Henton, then narrows and drops onto the moor before rising to Theale and falling sharply to Wedmore, descending rapidly to Blackford and running level over the moor to Mark, Mark Causeway, Watchfield and Highbridge.
- The 118¾-mile Bath road from Hyde Park Corner by Hounslow, Colnbrook, the uneven macadam of Slough, Maidenhead, Twyford and Reading, then Newbury, Hungerford, Savernake Forest and the steep Marlborough Hill, Beckhampton, Cherhill, Calne, Chippenham, Rowden Hill, Box Hill and Batheaston into Bath, and on by Newton Gate, Saltford Hill, Keynsham and Brislington to Bristol Bridge.
- Goes out by Queen St. under the railway and by Braywick to Holyport, just beyond which the road runs through a shallow spring-fed stream with a side footbridge that will take tricycles, then rises easily by Fosley Green to Touchen End.
- Leaves Reading by Southampton St. and Whitley St. on a long steady rise, then runs by Three Mile Cross, Spencerswood, Swallowfield Mill, Riseley (Bull Inn), Heckfield and Mattingley to a short winding hill down into Hook, and on over the canal to North Warnborough and Odiham, the surface generally rather rough.
- Follows Route 277 to Riseley, then bears right at the Bull Inn over Heckfield Heath, skirts Strathfieldsaye Park to the Wellington Monument and runs down to the Wellington Arms at Stratfield Turgis and Sherfield, an up-and-down road whose surface deteriorates towards Basingstoke, ending with a sharp descent and the climb up Wote St. to the Market Place.
- Takes the Bath road to Aldermaston, then climbs past Aldermaston Park through Inhurst Green, Baughurst and Wolverton to Kingsclere, where White Hill is a long steep incline of nearly 1.5 miles, and continues by Whitchurch, Hurstbourne Priors, East Aston, Longparish and Wherwell to join the Andover road near Fullerton Station.
- Runs from Newbury by Bartholomew St. over the railway to Newtown Water, where the Emborne is crossed by a very narrow bridge to be approached cautiously, then over Newtown Common and Whiteway, up the very loose and stony White Shoot Hill, and by Litchfield, Whitchurch, Tidbury Hill, Bullington Cross and Sutton Scotney into Winchester by Jewry St.
- Follows the Whitchurch road out of Newbury over the Emborne, then makes a long steep climb from Highclere to the Three Legged Cross Inn at Crux Easton, drops to Hurstbourne Tarrant and Andover, and continues by Fullerton, Leckford, Stockbridge, Houghton, Mottisfont, Timsbury and Greatbridge to Romsey.
- Climbs a steep canal bridge out of Hungerford and takes a rough hilly road by Wexcombe, where the old main road is abandoned at Shears Inn, then runs through Collingbourn Ducis, North Tidworth, Shipton Bellinger, Parkhouse and Cholderton and past Wilbury Park to Allington, Boscombe and the Winterbournes, joining the London road at St. Thomas' Bridge.
- Ascends a very steep and rough hill from Marlborough station into Savernake Forest, falls steeply past a gate that is often closed against vehicles, then runs by Steep Green, Burbage, Collingbourn Kingston and Collingbourn Ducis to Ludgershall and Weyhill, with a long descent into Andover on a good but often loose gravel surface.
- Leaves Marlborough by a long steep winding hill, drops the very steep Oare Hill to Pewsey, and follows the Avon by Manningford Bruce, Upavon, Nether Avon and Amesbury, then past Lake and the short deceptive Chalkpit Lynch through the Woodfords and Stratford past Old Sarum to Salisbury, the flint surface being very loose in dry weather.
- Turns off at the White Hart Inn in Calne, crosses the Devizes and Chippenham roads at right angles onto a narrowing road to Westbrook, then drops the steep Sandridge Hill to Melksham, where the George Inn corner leads over the Avon to Bradford, entered by a steep and narrow descent.
- Ascends St. Margaret St. out of Bradford, undulates to Wingfield and passes Road village to Old Road, then joins the road from Bath just short of Beckington and drops by an easy slope to the village on a good surface.
- Follows the Bradford road (Route 285) out of Calne to the second cross-roads, then runs undulating and chiefly downhill to Rowde and is almost level to Dunkirk, from where a steep and generally loose ascent leads into Devizes.
- A narrow lane leads from Calne to Sandy-lane, then a very poor road skirts Spye Park with a gate across it that forces a dismount and a second gate kept closed beyond the very steep and tortuous descent of Bowden Hill, after which Lacock, Corsham and Pickwick bring it onto the main London road; it is not to be preferred to the road via Chippenham.
- Leaves the London road at Derry-hill for the very steep and loose-sanded Old Derry Hill, skirts Bowood Park to Sandy-lane and Rowde, climbs into Devizes and continues by Potterne, Dues Water, Littleton, West Lavington, Gore Cross, Tilshead, Maddington (Shrewton) and Winterbourn Stoke to Berwick, Stapleford, Stoford and Wilton.
- Turns off at the foot of Rowden Hill for Notton and Lacock, then reaches Melksham, whose main street has several dangerous sewer-gratings, crosses a very steep canal bridge to Semington and Yarnbrook (Long's Arms), and runs by Heywood-church and Westbury to a steep tortuous descent into Biss Bottom before Warminster.
- Takes the main Bath road for four miles to the Hare and Hounds Inn at Pickwick, then climbs by Chapel Plaster and a steep rise to Bradford Leigh before dropping a steep winding hill into Bradford-on-Avon.
- Runs from Bath over Pulteney Bridge and along Great Pulteney St. through an avenue of trees to Claverton and Limpley Stoke, then makes the trying but generally rideable 1.5-mile climb of Limpley Stoke Hill and continues by Woolverton, Shawford and Beckington over Bonnyleigh and Oldford Hills to a steep descent into Frome and a very stiff rise up Bath St.
- Climbs Old Wells Road past the Bear Inn to the workhouse on Odd Down, then falls nearly a mile down the very steep Midford Hill with a dangerous bend to the left at the foot, and runs by Midford, Hinton Charterhouse and Norton St. Philip to rejoin the recommended road at Woolverton; nearer by 1.5 miles but not recommended.
- Follows the Frome road to the Viaduct Inn at Limpley Stoke, drops a short but very steep pitch and then ascends the rough and exceedingly steep Winsley Hill, after which good easy running through Winsley ends in a very steep hill down into Bradford.
- Climbs Market St. and Masons Hill out of Bradford past Christ Church, rises to Frankleigh and on to the fifth milestone from Bath, then descends a long hill, steep in places with several sharp bends, to Bathford and Batheaston, where it joins the London road.
- Rises out of Bradford by St. Margaret St., crosses the canal and climbs rather steeply to Trowl Common before running down into Trowbridge, then leaves the town on the left and turns at the Ship Inn and past the barracks to North Bradley and Yarnbrook, where the Chippenham road joins.
- Takes the Bristol road to the Globe Inn, climbs a stiff slope to Corston and rises for a mile and a half to the old toll-house, then runs by Marksbury, Farmborough, the colliers' village of Hobb's Wall, High Littleton and Hallatrow to White Cross Gate, climbs the long and rather severe Rush Hill, and goes by Ston Easton to Old Down Inn.
- Passes the workhouse on Odd Down and descends the long Dunkerton Hill, which has an extremely awkward bend at the foot over a canal bridge, then reaches Radstock past two level crossings, climbs the short but very steep Wells Hill, and runs by White Post Inn, Chilcompton and Old Down Inn to West Horrington and the long descent of Horrington Hill into Wells.
- Descends Milsom St., Old Bond St. and Union St. following the tramlines, crosses the old bridge and takes the Lower Bristol Road through Twerton, level but exceedingly rough and uneven and generally much congested with heavy traffic, to Newton Gate where the direct London and Bristol road is joined.
- Branches at Locksbrook cemetery for a very stiff rise to Kelston, then falls by a long hill with two sharp corners to Bitton and Willsbridge, climbs the short but very steep Stouts Hill to Hanham where the electric tramway begins, and drops the steep Nag's Head Hill to St. George and Lawrence Hill, entering Bristol through its least attractive quarter.
- Leaves the direct Bath road at Beckhampton and crosses the open downs and the edge of Roundway Down to Devizes, then descends a long straight hill to Seend Bridge and goes by Melksham, whose main street has several dangerous sewer-gratings, and Shaw to a long steep ascent before dropping to Box, where the main road is rejoined.
- Follows the Bath road to a fork beyond Seend Bridge, climbs to Seend and drops two steep and often rough descents with a sudden sharp bend near the bottom, then runs by Semington cross-roads and Hilperton into Trowbridge and continues past the barracks through Studley, Southwick and Old Road to Beckington.
- A short link that is good and level from Melksham Market Place to within a quarter-mile of Semington, where it crosses a steep canal bridge and rises gradually through the village to the cross-roads and joins the Devizes road for Trowbridge.
- Runs by Wingfield and a very steep rise to Farleigh Hungerford, then almost continuously uphill on an indifferent limestone surface to Norton St. Philip, and by Faulkland, the Ammerdown Park gates, Kilmersdon and Charlton to White Post Inn on Norton down; the book warns the route is very hilly and rough throughout.
- Follows the Bath road to Chippenham, then runs by Giddeahall and Ford with an almost continuous climb to Marshfield and Cold Ashton, drops the nearly mile-long Tog Hill with a double turn at the foot, and continues by Wick, Bridge Yate, the long rough Warmley Hill and Kingswood-church to St. George and Lawrence Hill; the last four miles are exceedingly rough.
- The main southern road, climbing out of Bedminster to Bedminster Down and running by Barrow Gurney reservoirs, Lulsgate Bottom, Red Hill, Langford, Churchill, Star, Sidcot and Cross, then over the moor by Rooksbridge and Brent Knoll to Highbridge, Bridgwater, Taunton, Wellington, White Ball, Cullompton and Broadclyst, with telegraph poles the whole distance from Bedminster Down except through Wellington.
- Climbs from Totterdown through Knowle to Whitchurch, drops the steep Ursleigh Hill and Pensford Hill into Pensford, then goes by Temple Cloud, Cloud Hill and White Cross Gate to Farrington Gurney, climbs the long and rather severe Rush Hill, falls very steeply into Chewton Mendip and crosses Chewton Edge at the top of the Mendips before the very steep and rough Stoberry Hill into Wells.
- Leaves the Exeter road on Bedminster Down for Bishport, then makes the very steep and rough ascent of Dundry Hill with sharp double bends and descends Chew Hill to Chew Stoke, continuing by Blue Bowl, West Harptree, Coley and Litton to Chewton Mendip on an inferior surface.
- Follows the Wells road to the top of Rush Hill, then bears off through Ston Easton to Old Down Inn and runs by Gurney Slade and the Mendip Inn over the top of the Mendips to Downside, from where a long winding descent leads into Shepton Mallet and a sharp rise past the Market Place to the Hare and Hounds Hotel.
- Leaves the Wells main road at Farrington Gurney, crosses the railway bridge and falls gradually alongside the line to Welton, then makes a stiff rise to the Stones Cross Inn at Midsomer Norton and climbs sharply again into Radstock, the roads being narrow throughout and cut up in parts by local coal traffic.
- Goes out by Redcliffe St. and Bedminster Bridge along Coronation Road, skirts Ashton Park to Long Ashton, Bourton Station, Flax Bourton, West Town, Brockley and Cleeve, then climbs and drops the steep Roddy Hill to Congresbury and runs almost dead level but very tortuous by Puxton Station and the Woolpack Inn to Worle and the sea.
- Runs along Beach Road parallel to the sea to Uphill, climbs a short but rather stiff hill and passes the toll-house and station to Bleadon, then crosses the river past the Hobbs Boat Inn and goes by East Brent to the Brent Knoll Inn, where the Bristol to Bridgwater road is joined; the surface is fair but rutty after very dry weather.
- Takes the Bridgwater road to East Brent and Brent Knoll, then follows the telegraph poles by Watchfield to the level crossing at Bason Bridge Station and across the moor to Woolavington, before running the ridge of the Polden Hills by Ashcott and Pipers Inn and on through Walton and Street to Glastonbury.
- Follows the Bridgwater road to Bleadon, then turns past the Hobbs Boat Inn through Lympsham and Brent Knoll village, crosses the railway at Brent Knoll Station and leaves Berrow on the right; the road is quite level and generally in good condition.
- Climbs from Baldwin St. by Park St. and Queen's Road to Clifton and crosses the Suspension Bridge (toll 1d., and 1d. for the machine), then rises past Ashton Court Lodge and Failands Inn and drops a long rough hill into Tickenham, ending with the very steep, narrow and devious Highdale Road into Clevedon.
- Branches off the Weston-super-Mare road at Bourton Station for a rough and chiefly rising road to Wraxall, then descends steeply, crosses a stream and climbs a short steep hill to Nailsea, before dropping the steep rough Tickenham Hill with an abrupt bend to the left at the bottom by the Star Inn.
- Follows the Clevedon road beyond the Clifton Suspension Bridge to Abbot's Leigh, then makes a long, steep and rather narrow descent and a very steep drop into Easton-in-Gordano (St. George) with an exceedingly awkward turn to the left at the foot, and runs by a long narrow descent to Portbury and on to Portishead.
- Takes the Weston-super-Mare road for three-quarters of a mile, then turns through Bower Ashton and ascends Rownham Hill, the first part of which is steep, rough and quite unrideable, joining the Clifton route at the top and continuing by Abbot's Leigh.
- Keeps straight on at the end of Portishead High St. and runs practically level by Weston-in-Gordano and Walton-in-Gordano, with only two gentle ascents and a rather steep fall just short of Clevedon, on a generally very good surface, finishing up the very steep Highdale Road.
- Leaves Clevedon by Albert Road, Sunnyside and a rather steep descent of Queen's Road past the railway station, then runs level but on a very indifferent surface by Kenn and Yatton Station to Yatton, descending gradually to Congresbury and dropping a short steep slope with an abrupt bend to the Market Cross.
- Keeps left at the Cross by the Congresbury Inn, a turning that needs care when coming down from the river bridge, and follows a narrow, almost level road through Stock to the junction with the Bristol road, then climbs a long steady slope to the old toll-house at Churchill on a good surface.

- Runs west from Exeter over Little John's and Pocombe Hills, Crockernwell, Sticklepath and Okehampton to Bridestow, Lifton, Launceston, Bolventor, Bodmin, Truro, Redruth, Camborne, Hayle and Penzance, with an exceptionally fatiguing Exeter-Okehampton stage and a Bodmin descent that on Friday market days "can hardly be ridden in safety."
- Crosses the heart of Dartmoor by Longdown, Steps Bridge, Doccombe, Moreton Hampstead, Merripit Hill, Postbridge, Two Bridges, Rundlestone and Merrivale Bridge, a mountainous perpetually rough road much of which must be walked, signposted only by lettered stone posts and armless wooden posts with names painted vertically.
- Follows Route 322 to Two Bridges then climbs through Princetown and over Peek Hill to Dousland, Roborough Rock, Derriford Hill, Crownhill and Mannamead, with an exceedingly rough and very steep descent to Devil's Bridge and tramlines running into wood-paved Plymouth.
- Goes north from the Butter Market by St. Stephens, Yeolmbridge, Ladycross, Doulsdon and Grimscott, with a long steep climb out of Yeolmbridge, very rough surface after the 7th milestone, and a very steep and awkward canal bridge just short of the Red Post Inn that should be approached cautiously.
- Follows the Penzance road past Tregedillat, then Piper's Pool, Hallworthy, Tresoake Hill and Davidstow to Bossiney, ending with loose stony climbs and a very steep rough descent with several sharp bends between high hedges before a level run into Trevena.
- Runs as for Trevena to the Victoria Inn at Davidstow, then keeps straight on following the telegraph poles and descends a long hill into Camelford on a good surface.
- Climbs St. Nicholas St. out of Bodmin, drops to Halgavor Bridge and makes a long steep climb to the old toll-house at Trefry, then passes the gates of Lanhydrock House and Sweets-house before a rough, steep descent that meets Lostwithiel's main street at right angles.
- Leaves the Truro road beyond Lanivet for Lockingate, Bugle, Stenalees and Carthew, nearly all uphill to Stenalees and then falling steeply, on a surface that is rather rough and very heavy after rain from Bugle onwards.
- Follows the main Truro road twelve miles to Indian Queens, then turns off by White Cross, Mountjoy and Quintrell-downs over two level crossings, on a narrow, tortuous and rough stretch that improves beyond Mountjoy.
- Descends past the Asylum to two railway crossings at the foot, climbs the long tedious hill to Mount Charles and continues by Washaway and Egloshayle to Wadebridge, then over High-lanes with a very rough valley descent and a steep final drop into Padstow.
- Turns off the Padstow road at Mount Charles for Longstone, St. Tudy, Hengar Gate and the Leathern Bottle near Michaelstow, a winding but well-signposted road whose gradients the book notes are more favourable going south.
- Runs by Mitchell, Tredinnick, Gummows Shop and Tresillion Hill to Kestle-mill and Quintrell-downs, with a loose heavy descent of Tresillion Hill, a steep awkward bend climbing out of Kestle-mill, and two tramway crossings - the second cutting the road diagonally - on the always uneven last mile into Newquay.
- Leaves Newquay over two tramway crossings that intersect the road at awkward angles, passes Porth cross-roads and Shop to St. Columb Minor, then makes the long tedious and much cut-up climb of Rialton Hill to Trebarva-chapel and Carnanton Lodge.
- Branches off the Redruth and Penzance road and crosses the Exeter-Penzance direct road at Mithian-church by the Chiverton Arms, an excellent easy-gradient road - the book warns every other approach to St. Agnes is rough and practically unrideable.
- Leaves by Bond St. under the railway viaduct past the Trefusis Arms, climbs Wheal Buller Hill crossing two tramlines about 100 yards apart, then runs by Fourlanes, Burrows and Treneere to Wendron and joins the main Penzance road at an old toll-house short of Helston.
- Runs south by Basset Road past Pendarves Park, Crowan's St. Aubyn's Arms, Jenkins Bottom and Nancegollan to Sithney-common, finishing with the long and very steep descent of Sithney-common Hill and a rapid climb into Helston.
- Leaves the Penzance road at the fork at the end of the causeway, passes under the railway twice to a short steep rise into Lelant, then a long ascent and steep fall into St. Ives on a good surface.
- Runs west by Alverton, the steep and very rough Toltuff Hill, Buryas Bridge, Drift and Catchall to Tregonebris Hill, Crows-an-wra and Sennen, the surface mostly rough and stony and much cut up by tourist traffic on the last stretch.
- A succession of steep rough hills by Catchall, Trelew Hill, St. Buryan, Buryan Hill and Trereen to Trevescan, the Buryan Hill descent being particularly dangerous with a treacherous bend in its steepest part, and Logan Rock itself reachable only on foot from the Logan Rock Inn, where machines are looked after.
- Branches off the Land's End road on the ascent beyond Alverton and follows the telegraph poles the whole way by Newbridge and Tregerras Gate, a rough hilly road but with no severe gradients.
- Descends Market Jew St. and skirts Mount's Bay by Longrock, Crowlas, Cannons Town and St. Erth to Lelant, the shore stretch level but very uneven, with a short steep ascent into Lelant before joining Route 337.
- Leaves the Truro road at the Blue Anchor police station for Summercourt, Mitchell, Zelah, Marazanvose, Four Barrows, Trevissome, Mithian-church, Blackwater and Scorrier into Redruth, a route the book says is much easier travelling eastward and shorter by three and a half miles than via Truro.
- Goes by Alphington and Kennford over the steep, tortuous, loose-flint climb of Haldon Hill to Chudleigh, Chudleigh Knighton, Bickington, Leny Hill, Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, South Brent, Ivybridge and Plympton, ending on the excessively rough Laira Embankment road where a toll of 3d. is levied on cyclists.
- Leaves the Plymouth road at the Dart bridge and runs parallel to river and railway by Hood Bridge, Huxhams Cross, Shinners Bridge and Dartington into Totnes, an easy undulating road of varying and in parts very good surface, with narrow rough streets in the town.
- The coast route by Exminster, Kenton, Starcross, Dawlish, Teignmouth and the tolled Shaldon Bridge (1d. plus 1d. per wheel), over Watcombe Hill to St. Mary-church, Torquay, Paignton and Churston, across the Dart by the Sandquay ferry (1d., 2d. for a machine) to Dartmouth, then Slapton Sands, Kingsbridge, Modbury and the tolled Laira Bridge into Plymouth.
- Climbs Fore St. past West Teignmouth church, passes Bishopsteignton and turns at Wear Cross down a long winding slope through Kingsteignton to Newton Abbot, then by Travellers' Rest onto the main Exeter-Plymouth road over Leny Hill, whose descent into Ashburton is steep but well surfaced.
- Follows the Dartmouth road to Churston Station and village, then a short rise and long gradual descent to Brixham keeping left of the two old toll-houses, on a good hard surface that turns greasy after rain.
- Runs by Chudleigh, Chudleigh Station, Preston Cross, New Cross and Kingsteignton to Newton Abbot, then past Wolborough toll-house and Two-Mile Oak Inn over Bow Hill to Little Hempston, Bridgetown and Totnes, and on by Harberton Ford, Halwell and Sorley Cross to a very steep fall through Kingsbridge.
- Ascends East St. out of Newton Abbot and runs by Kingskerswell and three railway bridges to Torre Station and Torre Square, the surface rough and heavy but the gradients not difficult, ending in a long steep descent into Torquay.
- Follows the Torquay road to Torre Station, then keeps right past the Clarence Hotel and descends Avenue Road by an easy gradient, rounding past Torquay Station to Livermead to join the coast road for Paignton.
- Climbs the very steep Bridgetown Hill out of Totnes and runs by Tree Street Cross, Loncoombe Cross and Collaton to Paignton and Preston, then over Tunnel Hill with a steep fall to Livermead and a dead-level sea wall into Torquay, on good macadam throughout.
- Takes the Kingsbridge road to Halwell, then bears left past The Old Inn, Hemborough Post and Norton to Dartmouth cemetery at Townstall, from which a long and in part very steep winding descent leads down New Road and Duke St. to the Quay.
- Leaves by Fore St. and the Bull Inn past the cemetery, crosses Rollaton and the very steep rough Wonton Hill to Avonwick, runs level through thick woods beside the r. Avon where the surface is often wet and heavy, then joins the main Exeter road at the Carew Arms for the long tedious climb to Kingsbridge Road Station.
- Leaves by High St. and North St. following the telegraph poles over the short very steep Wembdon Hill to Cannington, Nether Stowey, Holford, Putsham, St. Audries, Williton, Washford, Bilbrook, Carhampton and Alcombe, with Blackmore Lane offered as a short cut avoiding Cannington on the uphill first nine miles.
- Follows the direct Minehead road to St. Audries, then takes a steep and very rough descent to Doniford and Watchet, climbing a stiff slope out of the town past the station and rejoining the main Bridgwater road at Washford.
- Runs by Staplegrove, Norton Fitzwarren, Milverton, Wiveliscombe, Waterow, Venn Cross, Shillingford, Bampton, Stuckeridge Bridge, the very rough Tucker's and Brummer Moors, Bish Mill, South Molton, Swimbridge, Barnstaple, Instow and Bideford to Horns Cross, Hobby Gate and Clovelly Cross, with milestones marked "Barum" for Barnstaple and a 2d. ferry from Instow Quay to Appledore.
- Follows the Exeter road to the Lamb Inn at South Appledore and the Waterloo Inn, then Sampford Peveril, the short but very steep descent known as "Rocky Way" and Halberton, ending with a stiff climb over the canal bridge and a long downhill run into Tiverton.
- Climbs out of Cullompton and drops very steeply and roughly into Bradninch, then goes by Stockwell villa, Silverton, the Ruffwell Inn, Thorverton Station, No Man's Cross and Shute Cross to Shobrook park and Creedy Bridge, a link between north Somerset and Okehampton that avoids Exeter and saves about two miles.
- Leaves the Barnstaple road a mile and a half beyond South Molton for Northland Cross, Brayford and a very steep tortuous ascent to Mockham Down Gate, then Bratton Down and Blackmore Cross to Blackmore Gate where the Ilfracombe road joins, with several dangerous descents warned of between there and Lynmouth.
- Leaves the Guildhall by King St. and West St. for Bray Bridge, Deptford Farm and Chittlehampton, falls with excessively rough surface to Umberleigh-bridge, then climbs a narrow, very steep and winding hill into Atherington and drops from Eastcombe Farm down a short but very dangerous hill.
- Leaves Barnstaple by Boutport St. on rough macadam, climbs a short but very steep hill at Pilton and runs almost level to Muddiford, then ascends sharply to Milltown and gradually to the Half-way House at Bittadon before an almost level run to Two Pots and a descent into Ilfracombe requiring the greatest care.
- Turns off at the Lamb Hotel in Barnstaple and rises past the North Country Inn to Chelfham Bridge and Bratton Bridge, then tackles the long and very severe ascent of Cott Hill — quite unrideable to Double Corners — and a very steep pitch past Westland Pound before dropping through Blackmore Cross to Blackmore Gate for Lynton and Lynmouth, the surface rough and stony throughout.
- A 13½-mile road out of Ilfracombe by High St. and Chapel St. that climbs steadily for two miles to the crest of the ridge, then falls past the Fox Hunter's Inn and Knowle to Braunton and Wrafton on a rough uneven surface, entering Barnstaple over the swing bridge across the r. Yeo into High St.
- Fifty-nine miles by Hele, Watermouth Castle, Hagginton Mill and Combmartin, over Kentisbury Down to Blackmore Gate and an unrideable drop into Parracombe, down the very rough Dean Steep to Barbrook Mill for Lynton and Lynmouth, then the tedious climb to Countisbury and over Oare Hill, taking the private road (free to cyclists) to avoid the dangerous Porlock Hill, and on by Allerford, Minehead, Dunster, Carhampton, Washford, Williton, Crowcombe and Bishops Lydeard into Taunton.
- Runs from Bideford Quay up Bridgeland St. and along North St., passing the turning for Westward Ho, to Northam, where it turns by the Kingsley Arms and drops by a narrow lane down a very steep and awkward hill into Appledore, the surface bad throughout; a note recommends the Instow ferry (2d.) instead.
- Given in two versions — A, by the Hobby Drive, entered at Hobby Gate for a 4d. toll and giving a two-mile near-continuous wooded descent with extensive sea views, and B, by the main road through Clovelly Cross, Dyke and Slerra with a long tortuous and very steep fall to Clovelly church — both ending in a precipitous, very rough hill down to the Quay, the main street itself being a flight of steps impassable to cycles.
- Twenty and three-quarter miles following the Hartland road past Clovelly Cross, then bearing left over undulating ground with a fair surface to Baxworthy Cross, beyond which the road becomes hillier and rougher before easier telegraph-pole-marked running past the West Country Inn to Kilkhampton.
- Follows the r. Torridge south by New Road to Landcross, Taddiport and Town Mills Bridge below Torrington, then climbs to Little Torrington and runs by Merton, Meeth and a rough stony drop to the Torridge before Hatherleigh, Jacobstow and Brightley Bridge into Okehampton; the older road over Langabear moor and Harperton down is shorter but a very trying seven miles.
- Descends New St. and a very steep hill to Torrington Station, crosses Rothern Bridge and climbs a long, for the most part quite unrideable hill to Frithelstock and Frithelstock Stone, joining the Bideford road at Stibbs Cross for Holsworthy; the nearer road via Taddyport, Langtree and Stibbs Cross is noted as practically unrideable.
- An excessively rough and hilly 17½ miles over Rothern Bridge and a long steep trying ascent to Catsborough Cross, then an almost precipitous drop to a stream and a tedious climb to Buckland Brewer before Horns Cross joins the main Hartland road; an alternative by the Yeo Valley and Alwington is given as the better route.
- Forty-eight and a half miles by Bideford, Landcross, Monkleigh, Frithelstock Stone, Stibbs Cross, Milton Damerell and Holsworthy Beacon to Holsworthy, then a stage locally called "fourteen miles and fourteen hills" over Wimble Hill, Clawton and Chapmans Well to Launceston, and on through Callington, St. Mellion and Hatt Hill to Saltash, where a steam ferry (4d. including machine) crosses to Devonport for Plymouth.
- Ten miles north from Holsworthy past the workhouse to Ridon and over Killatree moor, crossing the Bude Canal beyond Tamarstone Bridge by a very awkward stone bridge with exceedingly steep ascent and descent, then over Hobbacott-down and down the long Burwood Hill into Stratton and past Berries farm into Bude.
- Runs from the Exeter Guildhall by Cowley Bridge, Stoke Canon, Rewe and the Ruffwell Inn to Bickleigh and Tiverton, then up the Exe valley by Bolham, Cove and Exeter Inn to Stuckeridge Bridge and Exebridge, and on through Bridgetown, the long chiefly uphill pull to Wheddon Cross, Timberscombe, the zigzag climb through Dunster and Alcombe into Minehead.
- A direct but severe road by Calverleigh and the Royal Oak Inn on Gibbet moor to Rackenford Bridge, past the Bell Inn and an old toll-house to Creacombe Water and Ash Mills, where a very steep rough hill drops to a watersplash before Bish Mill; the note warns it is a series of dangerous descents in both directions on very loose stony surfaces.
- Follows the Minehead road to the Round House at Exebridge, then goes by Ripway Corner and Dulverton Station to Dulverton, up Higher Combe Drive and over the summit of Winsford Hill and the Three Barrows to Chibbet Cross and White Cross, down to Simonsbath and past Brendon Two Gates and Brendon Barton to the absolutely unrideable Barton Steps, reaching Lynmouth by Watersmeet; the whole moorland section is wild and exposed and to be avoided in rough weather.
- Forty and three-quarter miles by Cowley Bridge, Newton St. Cyres and Crediton, then Barnstaple Cross, Copplestone, Morchard Road, Lapford and Eggesford Bridge along the Taw valley to Umberleigh-bridge and Bishops Tawton, the surface turning execrably rough beyond Newport into Barnstaple; milestones give Barnstaple as "Barum".
- Seventeen and three-quarter miles of very indifferent surface from the Ship Hotel at Crediton over Barnstaple Cross and down into Colford, then by Bow, Stone Cross, Newland Bridge, Belstone Corner and Sampford Courtenay station, with a long steep climb and rapid tortuous descent to a stream before joining the main Exeter road into Okehampton; milestones abbreviate the town to "Oketon".
- Eighty-nine miles leaving the direct road on Sourton down for Downton and Mary Tavy into Tavistock, then over Lumburn Bridge and past Gulworthy to New Bridge on the Tamar and the very steep stony climb to Gunnislake, over Hingston Down to Callington, St. Ive and Merrymeet into Liskeard, thence by Route 385 to Truro; an alternative by Lydford, with its castle ruins and deep ravine, is appended.
- Thirteen and three-quarter miles climbing Spring Hill out of Tavistock by very steep gradients to the old toll-house, then undulating by Lamerton to Milton Abbot, Eastacot and Dunterton with a long descent to Greystone Bridge, followed by a mile of stiff toilsome but rideable slopes past the union workhouse and under Southgate into Broad St., Launceston.
- A very wild, lonely and dangerous Dartmoor crossing needing at least five hours and mostly walked, climbing over Pork Hill and Little Staple Tor, dropping by an exceedingly steep hill to Merrivale Bridge and up Rundlestone Hill, then Two Bridges, a precipitous unrideable descent to Dartmeet Bridge, New Bridge over the Dart and Holne Chase to Holne Bridge and Ashburton.
- Ninety-seven and three-quarter miles following the main Penzance road to Truro, then the Helston road to the seventh milestone where it turns off through Lower Penryn and Penryn, running mostly level on good macadam before rising rapidly to the top of Prince's St. and dropping steeply down High St. to Market Strand, Falmouth.
- Nineteen and three-quarter miles leaving Falmouth by Killigrew St. and rising past Upper Kegilliack, then bearing right beyond the Oaten Sheaf Inn through Trevervah to two very steep loose and stony descents before a long hill down to Gweek, from which a long climb leads to Dodsons Gap and the telegraph poles by Trenoweth to Lizard Town.
- Twelve miles up High St. and along the edge of Falmouth Harbour on good macadam to the granite works and swing bridge at Penryn, then a stiff rise through the town and an almost continuous, generally very rough climb under the railway bridge to Treleaver, where the Truro road is joined for Helston.
- Ten miles by Penryn and a long steady rise to the top of Treluswell Hill, then Burnthouse and a steep drop into Ponsanooth, past Pengreep by a long tedious steep narrow winding ascent to Comfort, and up a steady slope through Lanner and over Lanner Hill for a fine run down into Redruth.
- Fifty-two and three-quarter miles by Union St. and Stonehouse Bridge (1d. toll) up Devonport Hill and through the Raglan and Granby Barracks "Lines" to the Torpoint steam ferry (2d.), then Antony, Sheviock, Polbathic, Trerule Foot and Clicker Tor to Liskeard, Dobwalls, the Taphouses, Lostwithiel, Penpellick Hill, St. Blazey, St. Austell, Grampound and Probus into Truro.
- Fourteen and three-quarter miles up Old Town St. and the tramlines over Townsend Hill to the Mannamead terminus, then Manadon, Crownhill (Knackersknowle) and the short steep Derriford Hill to Roborough and Roborough Rock, followed by excellent running down to Horrabridge and a long winding ascent to Grenofen Cross before a mostly downhill run to Bedford Square, Tavistock.
- Twenty-nine and three-quarter miles following the Truro road to Polbathic, then a rapid drop to Hessenford and a long tedious climb to Short Cross, St. Martins and down Shutta Hill to East Looe bridge, over Wayland Cross to Pelynt and a long exceedingly steep tortuous descent to a watersplash at Pixwater (a second one follows) before Lanteglos Highway and the steep hill to Bodinnock, where a ferry crosses to Fowey between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. in summer.
- Nine miles running level beside the river and railway past Shutta to Sandplace, then turning up a long hill, steep in places, to Morval and the very steep rough Gellies Hill to Gellies, rising by easy undulations and a steep pitch to Horning Top before joining the main Plymouth road into Liskeard.
- Eight miles climbing a steep hill out of Fowey for an easy run to Menabilly Lodge and over Polmear Hill, which falls by a very steep gradient to Polmear, then level along the bay to Par Green and through Par village to Four Lords Inn at St. Blazey Gate, where the main Plymouth road is taken for St. Austell.
- Follows the Truro road to Dobwalls and then rises to Doublebois Station before a long steep hill with sharp bends midway drops into the Glyn Valley, passing Bodmin Road Station and climbing a long gradual hill with two sharp descents into Bodmin; a bye-road short cut near Trefry Gate saves two miles and some tedious ascents for anyone going further west.
- Leaves the Truro road at the top of the hill a mile and a half above Lostwithiel and runs by a good undulating road over Castle Dor and past Menabilly Lodge with easy rises and falls, ending in a very steep descent within half a mile of Fowey church.
- Leaves Truro by Lemon St. and a long steep ascent, then falls to Carnon and climbs to the seventh milestone and Treleaver, running by the Half-way House Inn to Poolgreen, Manhey and Trewenick before a steep bumpy descent into Helston and the long tedious climb of Sithney-common Hill to Breage, thence downhill through Ashtown to Marazion and along Mounts Bay by Longrock into Penzance.
- Eleven miles south from the Town Hall by Menage St. past Killiancar, where a short steep drop and matching rise lead on to Dodsons Gap and Trenoweth, then Curry Cross and the short but very steep Bochyn Hill down to Bochyn, after which an excellent pleasantly undulating road runs to Lizard Town.
- Sixty-four and three-quarter miles up the very steep Mitchell Hill out of Truro by Trespin, Killegrew Hill, Mitchell, Fraddon, St. Columb, Winnards Perch and Wadebridge to St. Kew Highway and Knightsmill for Camelford, then Tresparret Post (avoiding the very dangerous Cancer Hill), Wainhouse Corner, Treskinnick Cross, Widemouth Bridge and Stratton, over the long steep Ivyleaf Hill to Kilkhampton and Baxworthy Cross for Hartland, with a Part 2 branch turning off at Thorn Cross for Bude.
- Eight miles by the Camelford road to Winnards Perch, then two easy descents and moderate undulations on a fair but rough and stony surface to High-lanes, where the Bodmin road joins, ending in a long hill down into Padstow that is easy for the first half-mile and then very steep.
- Thirteen and three-quarter miles by the Hartland road to St. Kew Highway, then a rough surface past St. Kew Trelill and over Cheeney Down to Delabole, beyond which a very poor road drops by an exceedingly steep hill to the Prince of Wales Slate Quarries and climbs a very steep rough hill to Trewarmett for Trevena.
- Runs north-east on good easy gradients to Bossiney, then a sudden very steep and rough descent, a rapid mile-long climb to Trevalga and a steep rough tortuous hill with a very abrupt curve down into Boscastle, from which a very long and exceedingly steep ascent past Tresparret Post leads by Wainhouse Corner to Stratton.
- Five and a half miles west from Camelford by Front St. and the Sportsman's Arms, undulating to cross-roads before a steep hill and a rough steep drop to the Prince of Wales Slate Quarries, then a very steep rough climb over the stream to Trewarmett and a descent through Trewithin with a sharp rise into Trevena.

- Runs west along the Undercliff Road past St. Lawrence and the coastguard station to Blackgang and Chale, then Chale Green, Kingston Cross and Shorwell, Brixton, Mottistone, Hulverstone and Brook Cross, over the pass between Mottistone Down and Shalcombe Down to Chessell and Afton Farm, and through Freshwater and over Norton Hill and Hallett Shute to the Yarmouth drawbridge (toll 1d.); a Part 2 continues from Afton to Freshwater Bay.
- Eleven miles six furlongs east by Newport Road with a steep drop into Shalfleet, then past Newtown and Clamerkin Bridge to Locksgreen and Porchfield, a steep 100-yard pitch beyond the cross-road, and Tinkers-lane to Debourne cross-roads, from which a long decline past Northwood Park down Park Road and Terminus Road, with an awkward bend at the railway station, reaches Cowes High St. and the landing stage.
- Eight miles four furlongs taking the Whippingham road to the cross-roads beyond the schools, then a steady rise and fall past Palmers Bridge to Wootton Bridge, a stiff rise and steep climb over Quarr Hill with a rapid descent to Binstead, and on by Ryde parish church and John St. to High St. and the steep drop down Union St. into Pier St. for the Esplanade Station.
- The easiest of the three Ryde–Newport roads at seven miles two furlongs, climbing Union St. and High St. and turning along John St. before descending to Binstead and over the straight but rather steep Quarr Hill to Wootton Bridge, then taking the New Road past Palmers Bridge with a short sharp descent to the railway bridge over the r. Medina and a gradual rise into the town; the hillier "Old Road" via Wootton Station is described in a footnote.
- Leaves the Brading road beyond St. John's church for Nettlestone, with branches to Spring Vale and Sea View, then runs to St. Helens and down to St. Helens Station where the railway is crossed on the level and the causeway taken at a toll of 2d. to Bembridge, continuing by Bembridge Cross and a steep rough hill over Longlands Shute past Bembridge Fort to Yaverland and along the sea wall into High St., Sandown.
- Crosses from the West Cowes landing stage by the Floating Bridge, which plies every ten minutes for 2d. including machine, then goes up Castle St. and a long easy hill to Osborne Main Gates, past the Prince of Wales Gates and Hotel on a good level surface to Whippingham schools, and joins the Ryde road for a short steep fall to the railway bridge over the r. Medina and a gradual rise up High St. into Newport.
- Runs north from St. James's Square under the railway viaduct and past Parkhurst Barracks, over the steep pitch of Horsebridge Hill at Northwood, then bears left at the Horse Shoe Inn for the easier Debourne descent into West Cowes landing stage (5 m.).
- Climbs Upper St. James St. out of Newport and descends to the level crossing at Shide, then rises almost continuously to the crossing at Blackwater and on by Rookley, Bohemia and Bow Bridge to Godshill and Sandford, joining the Ryde road at Whitely Bank for Ventnor; good surface.
- Follows the Godshill and Ventnor road for 7 m. 1 f. to Whitely Bank, then keeps straight forward, slightly uphill for half a mile and undulating with a few sharp gradients over good surface into Shanklin (9 m. 1 f.).
- Leaves the Godshill road just short of Blackwater and runs under the high down to Arreton's White Lion Inn, then by the level crossing at Horringford station, Branstone Cross and Apse Heath cross-roads to Lake, turning at the Stag Inn and passing under the railway up a moderate hill to the barracks and Sandown.
- Climbs east from Newport over the Medina to Downend, then runs along the crest of Arreton down and over Mersley, Ashey and Brading downs, with a very steep fall and a dangerous right-angled bend by a chapel into Brading, before St. Helens and the toll causeway across Brading Harbour to Bembridge.
- Goes east from Newport and over Lynn common by a long gradual descent with a short steep pitch midway to Haven-street station and village, then by the windmill cross-roads to Haylands and Partlands Hotel, and down Swanmore Road and Union St. — a steep pitch at the bottom — into Pier St. for Ryde pier and esplanade.
- The main road north-west out of Newport, turning left at the workhouse and following the telegraph poles by good easy undulations to a short steep dip into Shalfleet, then over Ningwood Bridge and down into Yarmouth; surface generally good (9 m. 6 f.).
- Follows the Freshwater road past Carisbrook and Calbourne, then keeps right downhill and turns sharply at the bridges into Newbridge, rising stiffly through the village to Wellow and Thorley-chapel, and crossing a railway bridge to rejoin the main road for a short descent into Yarmouth.
- Runs west along High St. practically level to Carisbrook, where one very steep rise of nearly a mile follows the church, then undulates by moderate gradients to Calbourne's Sun Inn, Chessell and Afton Farm, joining the Yarmouth road at Freshwater Gate and turning down at Stark's Hotel to Freshwater Bay (11 m. 1 f.).
- Leaves Newport past the memorial column for Carisbrook Convent Gate, stiffening by Carisbrook Castle and running level past Gatcombe House to Sheat, then up the steepening incline through Chillerton-street to Kingston Cross, turning down at the Star Inn to Chale Green and Chale church.
- Takes the Godshill and Ventnor road to Rookley, then a hilly course past Leechmore Pond and a short descent into Niton, dropping steeply to the Undercliff Road with stiff undulations past the coastguard station to the Chine Hotel at Blackgang and a moderate hill down to Chale; surface generally rough.
- Goes by Carisbrook church and Bowcombe Farm, undulating with rises predominating past Cheverton Farm to an ascent of nearly half a mile that is rather stiff at the top, from which the road falls rapidly over loose stony surface down Shorwell Shute into the village (5 m.).
- Climbs out of Sandown High St. past the church, drops to Lake and rises by two long steep pitches to Apse Heath cross-roads and Whitely Bank, then falls to Sandford and Godshill and runs past Leechmore Pond to Chale Green, where it turns abruptly right to join the Ventnor road for Shorwell.
- Leaves Ventnor along the Undercliff Road to St. Lawrence and climbs the very steep, rough St. Lawrence Shute to Whitwell, then runs by Godshill, Bow Bridge, Bohemia and Rookley to the level crossings at Blackwater and Shide into Newport; a new and easier road up the Zigzag Road from the Royal Hotel is given in a footnote.
- Given in three versions — 7 m. 1 f. via Alum Bay, 3½ m. via Freshwater and 3¼ m. direct via Pound Green — the Alum Bay road climbing by Middleton and Stoats to the Alum Bay Hotel, then over Totland Bay and Colwell Bay past Golden Hill Fort and down Hallett Shute to the causeway and drawbridge (toll 1d.) into Yarmouth.
- Turns off the Newport road at Shalfleet and crosses a level crossing to Calbourne's Sun Inn, beyond which a steady rise of 1½ m., much steeper and rough and stony at the top, carries the road over the summit between Mottistone and Brixton downs before a steep rough descent to Brixton church.
- Divider page opening the appendix of supplementary routes, which restarts the numbering at Route 425 (London to Sevenoaks via Chislehurst and Orpington) and runs on to Route 448 (Bath to Weston-super-Mare).
- Inserted to escape the summer drag traffic on the main Bromley road, it runs from London Bridge by Borough High St., Old Kent Road, New Cross, Lewisham, Lee Green and Mottingham to the hill above Chislehurst and down through Prickend and Orpington to Greenstreet Green, the gradients steeper and more frequent but the surface superior (25 m.).
- Descends Oak Lane out of Sevenoaks and skirts Everlands Park by sharp ups and downs needing careful riding to Goathurst-common and Ide-hill, then by Coopers Corner, Four Elms, Edenbridge, Haxted Mill and Lingfield to New Chapel Green and on through Copthorne and Haywards-heath to Brighton; the first 7 m., though picturesque, is decidedly inferior in surface.
- Leaves Tunbridge by the Flying Dutchman Inn for Leigh, Penshurst and Bough Beech, then Four Elms and the steep winding hill through Crockhamhill to Kent Hatch, dropping to Limpsfield and climbing the long steep rough ascent through Titsey to Worms Heath, always rough, before an almost continuous descent by Sanderstead to the tramway terminus at South Croydon (20½ m.).
- Shorter by a mile than the main road via Battle, it rises stiffly through Robertsbridge to Johns Cross, then runs by an undulating road to Vinehall and the Royal Oak Inn at Whatlington, descending nearly 1½ m. by easy gradients to the old toll-house at Sedlescombe, where the Maidstone road joins for Hastings (11 m.).
- Leaves Reigate by Bell St. for Woodhatch and the forks on Earlswood common, crosses Petridgewood common and drops sharply to Salford Mill, then follows a level but poor-surfaced winding road through Weatherhill and Smallfield, chiefly rising to Felbridge where the Godstone road joins for East Grinstead (13¾ m.).
- Taken by local riders in preference to the main road via Groombridge as shorter and easier though narrow, it runs by Hammerwood church and Coulstock Gate to Holtye-common and the Sussex Oak Inn at Blackham, down a long narrow steep hill to Ashurst — rough, particularly in summer — then a very steep ascent to Crockhurst Hatch Corner and Langton Green.
- Runs south from Polegate over the level crossing by Wilmington and Sherman Bridge to Alfriston and Frog Firle, then down a short, steep, very winding hill between high banks and over the steep Hindover Hill to Sutton and Seaford; between Alfriston and Sutton the road is extremely rough and hilly, and an easier line by Litlington and Exceat is given.
- Climbs Water Lane out of Old Eastbourne by a long, winding, very steep and generally rough hill to the top of the downs, descends to Eastdean and ascends two very steep water-scored slopes to Friston, then drops nearly half a mile of very steep shingly road down Exceat Hill to the bridge and a level run into Seaford; not to be attempted after nightfall.
- Follows the East Grinstead road 26 m. to New Chapel Green, then by Copthorne, Crawley-down and a long stiff rough ascent to Turnershill, Selsfield-common, Ardingley, Stone Cross and Lindfield, on by Wivelsfield and Ditchling over loose flinty surface to the steep climb up Clayton Hill and a gradual descent past Pyecombe into Brighton.
- Runs from Hyde Park Corner by Barnes, Mortlake and East Sheen to Sheen Gate and crosses the 3 m. of moderate undulations in Richmond Park past White Lodge to Kingston Gate — the park open to vehicles 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in summer — then by Queen's Road to the Portsmouth road and level rough going through Norbiton into Kingston.
- Descends Thames St. and crosses Kingston Bridge by a level but bumpy road to Hampton Court, then over Hampton Court Bridge past Hurst Park to East Molesey and Walton on excellent surface, and by Oatlands-park and the steep drop down School Hill through Weybridge to Addlestone, where the Chertsey road joins for Guildford (21¼ m.).
- Takes the main Guildford and Portsmouth road to Ripley, then Sendmarsh, Send, Cartbridge canal crossing and Old Woking, over Westfield common to Mayford and Smart's Heath, and along Brookwood Lye past Brookwood station to Pirbright Bridge, the surface becoming very loose as Bisley Camp is approached (33¾ m.).
- Follows the main Exeter road through Hounslow and Feltham to Sunbury, where a watersplash obstructs the riverside road but a narrow foot-bridge takes most varieties of cycle, then crosses Walton Bridge for Oatlands-park, Weybridge and Addlestone and runs by Ottershaw and Chobham along a rough stony lane to Bisley Green and the Cowshott entrance (31¼ m.).
- Goes south from Chertsey by Botleys lodge and Lyne over Troys Hill, then past Longcross church across Chobham common, rough and loose with short hills, to Updown-hill post office, where a rather steep climb leads through Windlesham and the telegraph poles are followed by an excellent road into Bagshot.
- Follows the Guildford road to New Haw Bridge and the canal, then a level but poor-surfaced road to Byfleet and across the Wey to Pains Hill, a short steep fall to the Mole at Street Cobham, and on by Church Cobham and Stoke D'Abernon through Woodlands Park to the railway bridges at Leatherhead station.
- Descends Bridge St. over the Mole and rises through Fetcham to Great and Little Bookham and Effingham, crossing Effingham common — closed by a gate near the junction station — to Martyrs Green, where the Black Swan Inn marks the turn down to Ockham and Ockham Park for the main Guildford road into Ripley (9 m.).
- Climbs sharply through Stoughton and Pitch-place to Worplesdon, then runs down to Rickford Mill and over Bullswater common to Pirbright Bridge and the Camp railway bridge, beyond which the sandy road by the Cowshott entrance is practically unrideable for a quarter mile, continuing past Sibthorpe farm and Bisley Green and the Gordon Boys' Home to Bagshot.
- The most level and easiest of the three roads between the towns at 12¾ m., leaving Farnham by East St. over two railway bridges to Badshotlea, then by the Princess of Wales Inn to Ash and its level crossing, Normandy and Willeygreen, and over Clasford common to Fairlands farm and a short sharp fall to the Wey at Guildford.
- Preferred to the main road via Ascot and Wokingham for surface, gradients and scenery though intricate and not recommended after nightfall, it climbs Egham Hill and Middle Hill to Englefield Green, enters Windsor Great Park at Bishops Gate and passes the George III statue at the end of the Long Walk to Forest Gate, then crosses sandy Windsor Forest, very heavy in wet weather, to Winkfield.
- Part of the old London and Exeter coach road and nearly 2 m. shorter than the Chard and Yarcombe route, it runs by Ilminster station and Horton to the Five Dials Inn at Broadway-hill, then up Buckland Hill — a rise of 630 ft. in 4 m. that deters many riders going west — past Buckland St. Mary and down to the Yarty valley, climbing again through Marsh to Stop Gate and Devonshire House Farm.
- Much easier than the Sidbury and Sidmouth road, it leaves the Exeter road at the third milestone for Alfington and Ottery St. Mary, where a short but very steep pitch drops to the Square, then follows the railway to Tipton and Harpford with its steep fall and awkward bend, on by Newton Poppleford and Colaton Raleigh to East Budleigh and the Rolle Hotel at Exmouth (20¼ m.).
- Runs west over the Otter to Awliscombe, then up the long ascent to Hembury Fort, steep and rough for the last half mile, with a very steep stony drop to Colliton Bridge and Dulford, turning at the Four Horse Shoes Inn down Horn Lane past a very awkward stone crossing to Willand, Tiverton Junction station and Halberton for Tiverton.
- Easier than the Bradninch route though 2½ m. longer, it takes the main Exeter road past Bere and climbs by a narrow road to Old Crabtree, then skirts Killerton Park and turns at a conspicuous beech tree for Huxham, crossing the Culm to Stoke Canon and falling to Cowley Bridge, where it turns over the railway and rivers for Crediton (18 m.).
- Seldom used and much hillier and narrower than the Bristol road, but avoiding Bristol's rough paving and very picturesque about Chelwood and Blagdon, it leaves the Bristol road at the Globe Inn for Corston and Marksbury, drops steeply off Houndstreet Hill to Chelwood and Stanton Wick, then climbs to West Harptree and Compton Martin before the very rapid fall to the George Inn at Blagdon and on by Rickford, Churchill, Sandford and Banwell.
