Articles in this issue
- Cites Times population statistics on Britain's seven million 15-24 year-olds as untapped cycling recruits, reports on the opening of the Raleigh factory extension at Nottingham, criticises Mr Justice Roche's ten-month sentence at Liverpool Assizes for a drunk driver who killed a woman cyclist, and challenges the Glasgow Herald's argument against motorists being able to see where they are going; announces a guinea postcard competition for the best answer to 'Why am I a Member of the C.T.C.?'
- By 'The Parson of Wideacre': a cycling tour from Salisbury through the Chalke Valley to Broad Chalke, home of novelist Maurice Hewlett (whose 'Old Rectory' garden is described), the 15th-century birthplace of scholar John Bekinsau, historian John Aubrey, and theologian Dr Rowland Williams, ending near Shaftesbury in Thomas Hardy's 'Shaston' country.
- Mr H. W. Hupfeld of the S.E. Section, Metropolitan D.A., recounts a three-week tour through Bale, St Gallen, Davos, the Julier and St Bernardin passes, Bellinzona, Lugano and the St Gotthard Pass to Zurich, comparing his free-wheel gear favourably against his companions' coaster hubs, which overheated on the descents.
- Discusses the merits of detachable butt-ended inner tubes versus quick-release hubs, examines a clergyman member's homemade auxiliary hand-propulsion sprocket, and recalls C. C. Fontaine's 'coffee mill' hand-and-foot machine in his 1895 London-York record and Harry Green's Bricknell hand-gear records; notes that 'Wayfarer's' replacement bicycle has been insured under a C.T.C. policy.
- 'Wayfarer' (W. M. Robinson) reviews his winter lecture tour of fourteen centres addressing over 5,500 people, from Newcastle-on-Tyne and Leeds to Cardiff, Leicester, Manchester and Edinburgh, singling out Percy Brazendale and Clement Hancock of the Liverpool D.A. and young Harry Jones of the new Cardiff and South Wales D.A. for praise.
- Reports the Roads Improvement Association's 35th AGM at the Surveyors' Institution on April 26th, chaired by W. Rees Jeffreys, with H. Percy Boulnois discussing unemployment-relief road widening schemes and W. Worby Beaumont noting the forthcoming 'walk to the left' footpath notices from July 1st.
- By John Urry: celebrates the Chancellor's continued failure to introduce a cycle tax, describes a dramatic change from bitter May weather to a beautiful spell between the 5th and 10th, and urges cyclists to mind their own road manners, citing the wide entrance to Nottingham via Castle Donington and Long Eaton as a model for road engineers.
- Reports the Liverpool D.A. Handbook selling out nationally, the North Lancashire D.A.'s 200-mile 24-hour run from Nelson on June 17th, the Yorkshire (West Riding) D.A.'s new set of Bartholomew contour maps, a rained-off joint run between the Glasgow and Lothians and Peebles D.A.s at Lanark, and the Manchester D.A.'s ladies' rally to Lower Peover on June 24th.
- Describes carved mediaeval lecterns at Detling and Norwich, the Anchor Church cave-dwelling at Repton and the Isle of Athelney where Alfred burnt the cakes, and Ralph Radcliffe's inscribed stone near Preston; queries and replies cover touring St Malo, taking a bicycle into Austria, the Cotswolds, Alpine gradients, the Lot-Célé-Vézère district, and a detailed Pyrenees route via the Somport and Col du Tourmalet.
- 'Maid Marian' test-rides the McKenzie lightweight motor cycle, built by the Hobart Cycle Co. of Coventry and sold at 26 guineas, covering 120 miles including the 1-in-14 gradient out of Welwyn on the Great North Road, though petrol consumption fell well short of its certified 164 miles to the gallon.
- Describes the opening of the Raleigh Cycle Co.'s new £250,000 Nottingham factory extension on May 5th, attended by the Rt. Hon. W. C. Bridgeman M.P. deputising for the Lord Chancellor, Sir Harold Bowden, and W. G. Howard Gritten M.P.; the works can now produce 100,000 bicycles, 10,000 motor cycles and 250,000 three-speed hubs a year.
- Quotes the Solicitors' Journal and Weekly Reporter's criticism of the Departmental Committee on the Taxation and Regulation of Road Vehicles for favouring motorists, noting that police representative Mr F. L. W. Elliott alone dissented from the recommendation to abolish the 20 m.p.h. speed limit.
- Notes a Justice Roche award of £1,000 damages to a Lancashire cyclist run down by a car, the Bolton D.A.'s century run to Burton-in-Kendal (37 starters, 34 finishing inside 9 hours), the presentation of a replacement bicycle to 'Wayfarer' at the Meriden cross on May 21st, and the Birmingham and Midland D.A.'s second grand rally at which 246 sat down to tea at Sutton Park.
- Reports the reception of the Club's booklet 'Why Cyclists Object to Compulsory Rear Lights', quoting a dismissive reply from Viscount Curzon M.P., favourable notices in the Leeds Mercury and Waterloo and Crosby Herald, and the Secretary's rebuttal of a hostile Autocar letter signed 'A Nuisance'.
- Letters column covering the 'Summer Time' clock debate, alloy steels (a reader proposes a Duralumin-type aluminium alloy), problems with Roman rims, whether reflex lenses are genuinely useless (citing an A.A.-fitted warning sign at Harrow), A. W. Rumney's further notes on touring Central France, and, continuing later in the issue, a report on the Frensham Pond inter-D.A. meet and a complaint about toll charges in Bolton Abbey Woods.
- Detailed June-July fixture lists for District Association sections nationwide, including the Birmingham and Midland D.A.'s 24-hour ride (June 10th) and ladies' 12-hour ride (June 11th), the Metropolitan North-Eastern Section's Whitsun tour to Cambridge, and the annual Oxford Inter-D.A. Meet at Godstow Nunnery on July 2nd.
