Articles in this issue
- A standing note that the latest hour for reception of copy for the Gazette is 5.30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
- The Editor explains this week's four-page number: at the last General Meeting the majority of members present wished the Gazette to be reduced in size whenever there was no matter except Tours to publish, and in deference to that wish it appears in a reduced form.
- Fifty-three members attended the old-established Ewell Meet, twenty of them from the S.E.; the N.E. straggled by Muswell Hill and made a complete circuit of London, being waylaid and refreshed by McCullum Hill at Savernake Cottage, while The O'Reilly rode up from Brighton as usual and Captain T. E. Scrutton drove a 58-in. wheel up the steep inclines at a smart pace. About forty sat down to tea, served out by J. Kinder and L. Potter, an Oxford contingent arrived late, and a full list of those present by District closes the report.
- The Hon. Sec. asks members who have not yet settled for their Race Meeting tickets to do so at once, so that the Treasurer can issue the trial balance sheet as resolved at the Committee Meeting of the 5th ultimo.
- W. T. Hill of 47, Belsize Avenue, N.W. lost a new black felt hat marked Townsend at the Annual Race Meeting, taking in mistake one with no maker's name but "London finish" inside, and asks the other owner to write.
- Theo. Godlee, District Captain, fixes the N.E. paperchase, postponed to suit Her Majesty the Queen, for the 15th July, promises tea afterwards with Mrs. Godlee, and hopes to close the run as near Whip's Cross as may be, with members of other Districts again welcome.
- Arthur E. Buckler announces Picnic No. 2 of the W. and S.W. Districts, repeating the successful first experiment at Wisley Hut on the 22nd inst.; tickets at half-a-crown are to be had from either District Captain, and lady visitors are reminded that Weybridge Station on the S.W.R. main line is about four miles from the scene.
- H. G. A. Brown, S.E. District Captain, gives notice that next Saturday's run (8th July) is to East Grinstead and Mr. Payne's hotel, starting from Central Croydon Station, Katharine Street, at 4.15, and invites members of other Districts who have long asked to share it.
- R. B. Hough of 151, Amhurst Road, Hackney again offers his 56-in. "Royal Challenge" with ball bearings to the front wheel, complete with lamp, priced £18 but will take £10.
- The district meet table for the coming weeks, from Lea Bridge Road, Whip's Cross, "Jack Straw's Castle," Savernake Cottage, Hammersmith Bridge, Kingston Station, Central Croydon Station and Lewisham Church, for Hoddesdon, Shepperton, Ickenham, Reigate, Riverhead, East Grinstead, Navestock, Little Berkhampstead and the Wisley Hut picnic.
- "Rambler" reports the President's entry for both Birmingham Championships, Cambridge consternation at paragraph three of the Bicycle Union manifesto on "riding to orders," W. K. Adam third in the Belgrave Club's One Mile Invitation at Surbiton, and H. R. Reynolds' London to York ride of 200 miles in 21 hours 43 minutes, made the day before he missed the Ewell run. He also notes the Hon. Ion Keith-Falconer's record Land's End to John-o'-Groats ride and a promised paper, "The Circuit of the Metropolis; or, Sixty Miles of London Macadam."
- A notice, reprinted from the Athletic Review, of H. L. Cortis's Principles of Training for Amateur Athletes: its Advantages and its Evils (Iliffe and Son, Coventry), praised for combining the medical expert with the practical athlete and for its coloured diagram. The reviewer joins issue with the author on rupture, records his condemnation of stimulants and tobacco as a "deadly poison," and singles out Chapter III on the possible evils of training.
- The Captain's sanctioned list for July, including the Railway Clearing House meeting at Stamford Bridge, the One and Twenty-five Miles Amateur Championships at Birmingham, athletic sports at Crewe, Bury St. Edmunds B.C.'s second annual race meeting and the L.A.C. Four Miles Open at Stamford Bridge.
- Theo. Godlee answers "Rambler" on the District Challenge Cup, pointing out that two members must reach the winning-post to score a victory, so a twice-overlapped man is worth keeping in against accidents to other Districts. A second letter signed "S. W." returns to the free tickets question, arguing against "Non sibi sed L.B.C." and "Eucalyptus" that members have rights and that attendance at the Club's own race meeting ought to be one of them.
- Contributions must be addressed to the Editor at 35, Eastcheap, E.C., bear the author's name though not necessarily for insertion, be written on one side of the paper only, and reach the office by 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday for immediate insertion.
