Articles in this issue
- Standing editorial notice that the latest hour for reception of copy for the Gazette is 6.0 p.m. on Tuesdays.
- A. W. Oman's reply to the previous leader 'Our Enemies,' written as 'the Championess of Woman': she foresees a future L.B.C. Boys' Race watched by matronly wives from the grand stand, diagnoses the heart disease the Editor hinted at as Love (absent from Dr. Quain's eighty pages), and argues that the real enemies of the Club are the professional chaffer who drags a man's secret out on a Saturday run and the incessant cycling talk in and out of season.
- At the meeting of Monday 4th instant John Dixon Butler, Llewellyn Hartridge and Gordon C. Larkworthy were elected members, and H. G. A. Brown, G. P. Coleman, Theo. Godlee, S. P. Smith and W. A. Smith were appointed the Club's delegates on the Bicycle Union for the year.
- E. S. Price lists the programme, One Mile Club Handicap, Two Miles Scratch for the Ladies' Challenge, Two Miles Open Handicap, Five Miles Open Scratch and Ten Miles District Challenge (no entrance fee), with entries closing on Saturday 9th instant, 2s. 6d. entrance for the first four events and 1s. 6d. tickets for the Palace and grounds.
- Captain Ashley W. Barrett repeats the arrangements for the Cambridge match on Saturday 9th June at 3 p.m., the 11.55 a.m. train from Liverpool Street, and his offer to lead a party riding up from Waltham Cross at 8 a.m. if word reaches him by 5 p.m. on Friday.
- The probable L.B.C. team against Cambridge, F. L. Adam, J. D. Butler and W. Wyndham in the Mile; F. L. Adam, G. F. Beck and J. D. Butler at four miles; W. Wyndham, H. R. Reynolds and M. H. Jephson at fifteen.
- E. S. Price gives notice of the Oxford match at the Crystal Palace next Wednesday 13th instant at 6 p.m., 1s. tickets from him because the Club must settle for a hundred whether used or not, and asks for dinner names by Monday 11th June.
- The corrected tournament draw through five rounds, Hewitt, Wadham, Gruggen, Naylor, Powell, the Potters, J. H. Scrutton, the Francises, Barker, Alfred Herbert, Sharp and Paull, with two byes, plus H. N. Sharp's note that it should have been stated last week that ties are not to be played on Saturday afternoons or evenings.
- E. S. Price reminds members that the Special General Meeting is on Monday 18th instant at the 'City Arms Tavern' at 6.30 p.m.
- Reports of the 2nd June runs from five districts. C. Y. Lyne describes the N.E.'s ride by Whip's Cross, Woodford and the Forest Road to the 'Green Man,' Harlow, and a hind wheel that shed its tyre on the way home; the W. and N.W. converged on the 'Bedford Arms,' Chenies, and a bathe in the river; A. Hawley and Harry L. Ryan alone reached the 'Anchor' at Shepperton; and R. G. Francis narrates the S.E. annual paperchase from Sanderstead church over Warlingham Green and Riddlesdown to the 'Glyn Arms,' hares Wyndham and Barker home in 1hr 1min with C. A. Brown the first hound, 23 men and 3 visitors at tea.
- District Captain R. G. Francis promises a good meet next Saturday: the Cambridge match result will be telegraphed to the 'Railway Arms,' where tea is at 7 o'clock, and the Croydon Division leaves the Fire Station at 4.30 punctually, allowing the Blackheath men a quarter of an hour's grace.
- District Captain H. C. Pigott announces that, with so many members at the Cambridge races, next Saturday's run has been altered by special request from Leith Hill to East Grinstead to meet the S.E. at their favourite rendezvous, assembling at Barnes Station at 4 o'clock.
- Tabulated district fixtures for the two coming Saturdays, Blackmore, Wheathampstead and the general converge on East Grinstead, then Chigwell, Stanmore, Newland's Corner and the Silent Pool, with the line 'June 16.…Annual Race Meeting.'
- Gerard F. Cobb's next instalment: § 21, Zurich to Schaffhausen and the Falls of the Rhine (train to Dachsen, bicycle left in the courtyard of Schloss Laufen, the mean Minster church, and lunch at the 'Lion d'Or' at Winterthur with a bottle of Schloss Teuffen), and § 22, Zurich to Constanz and back by Schaffhausen, with distance tables and a ride from Constanz made in the teeth of the strongest gale he ever met in the saddle.
- 'The Front Wheel Hub' reports the Oxford and Cambridge selection trials (Buckley winning the Two and Ten Miles at Oxford, Whatton the Two and Ten at Cambridge, Carr taking the Twenty-five by inches from Day), Mr. Cobb's resignation of the presidencies of the Bicycle Union and the C.U.Bi.C. and the £50 memorial subscription, and the Bicycle Union Council agenda of 14th June, the change of name to 'National' something, the appeals code, and Mr. Todd's resolution to suspend amateurs riding at unsanctioned sports.
- Full results from Oxford on Tuesday over a loose, dusty path: Buckley beat Whatton by five yards in a very slow Two Miles (6.37) and by 300 yards in the Ten (32min), and W. K. Adam won the Twenty-five Miles in 1hr 27min 12sec after Day fell forty yards from the finish while contesting the lead.
- Porcupine's notes: R. B. Hough's 170-mile ride from Hackney to Stowmarket and back, the N.E. D.C.'s sudden departure for Vienna, the S.E. notable who boasted of using his head in a paperchase and half an hour later bent a handle in a hole in the road, the 'wily Zulu' accused of hiring myrmidons to lay false trails, a jibe at lawn tennis as a game fit only for women and infants, and the reminder that entries for the Club's own race meeting close on Saturday.
- The Committee again press members to sell tickets, and reprint the comparative statement of expenses showing the shilling saved by buying a 1s. 6d. ticket from the Hon. Sec. instead of paying 2s. 6d. at the Palace, railway stations or other agents.
- An extended list running from the Pickwick races and C.U.Bi.C. v. L.B.C. on 9th June through the Club's own meeting on the 16th and the A.A.A. Championships at Lillie Bridge on the 30th, to the B.U. championships at Birmingham and the Crystal Palace in July, the Fifty Miles Bicycle Championship on 21st July, and the Surrey B.C. at Kennington Oval in September.
