Articles in this issue
- Standing note that the latest hour for reception of copy for the Gazette is 6.0 p.m. on Tuesdays.
- Leader explaining the Committee's novel experiment: since the L.A.C. has given the Club the free use of the Stamford Bridge Ground on 22nd September, and an ordinary open meeting in the dead season would lose money, they will hold a purely family gathering with no open event but a boys' flat race, no advertising and practically no printing. Admission one shilling, members free on showing their badge.
- At the meeting at the "City Arms" on Monday 23rd inst. the L.A.C.'s offer of Stamford Bridge Grounds for 22nd September was accepted with thanks and a race meeting resolved on, all bicycle races confined to members and other competitions to members and their friends; the old Race Committee was asked to make the arrangements. Signed E. S. Price, Hon. Sec.
- R. G. Francis, S.E. District Captain, hopes for settled weather and a good attendance next Saturday: the Croydon Division leaves the Fire Station at 4.15, while the Blackheath men run to Farningham according to the Meet Card.
- Full programme for Saturday 22nd September at 3.30 p.m., One Mile Club Handicap (gold, silver and bronze medals), Twelve Miles District Scratch on bona fide roadsters for men with eight meets to their credit, Half-mile Club Scratch, and a 220 yards flat race for boys under 16 introduced by members. Entries close 17th September; outsiders pay 1s. at the gates, and the afternoon is to serve as a General Meet with the attraction of members' sisters, cousins and aunts.
- District reports for 21st July: the N.E.'s Theo. Godkin and C. Y. Lyne rode to Epping through showers after the usual thunderstorm; the W.'s H. C. Pigott, back after three weeks, found nobody at the start and rode alone to Kew, Brentford, Isleworth and Ealing; and the S.E. records both its first Wednesday evening run of four men by Shirley and West Wickham to the drained bathing-pond at Keston, and a Saturday muster of eleven at the "George Inn," Down, under its new landlord. The N.W. ran to Cheshunt and the "Green Dragon."
- N.E. District Captain Theo. Godkin cannot offer tea at Whip's Cross because of a relative's illness, so the meet will be at 4.45 at Snaresbrook Station, G.E.R., where two hares will start, with tea afterwards at the "White Hart," Abridge.
- Table of the coming meets: the N.E. paperchase from Snaresbrook with tea at the "White Hart," Abridge; the N.W. from "Jack Straw's Castle" for Ickenham; the W. from Savernake Cottage for Burford Bridge; the S.W. from Kingston Station; the Croydon Division from Croydon Central for East Grinstead and Blackheath from the "Hare and Billet" for Farningham. No run on 4 August because of Bank Holiday.
- Report of the race at the Crystal Palace, won by H. F. Wilson of the Surrey B.C. from F. R. Fry (Clifton), H. R. Reynolds (C.U.Bi.C. and L.B.C.) and C. D. Vesey in 2hr. 46min. 26 sec. King of Salisbury, Tacagni, McKinlay, Popplewell and W. W. Scott led early; Wilson took the lead in the 26th mile, and Fry, quickened at last by his trainer at the 48th, regained more than half the lost lap. Eleven started, five were absent including Keith-Falconer and Oliver Thorn.
- J. S. Whatton writes to correct his own report of the Mile Championship: Gaskell's officially given 40 sec. was the time for the last quarter-mile, not the last lap, quite a different thing at the Crystal Palace. An editorial footnote adds that The Field is also in error.
- Notes on H. R. Reynolds's two fifty-mile time medals; H. F. Wilson's rise from beginner to front rank, cutting the four miles record to 11min. 37 3/5sec. at the Crichton B.C. evening meeting only for Gaskell to beat Liles in 11min. 34 4/5sec. half an hour later; the Crystal Palace Challenge Cup preliminary heats won by Perry and Liles; and Alford and Gibbs of the Stanhope B.C. riding 227 miles in 24 hours.
- Report of the Executive meeting of 17th July: five members appointed to meet five representatives of the Tricycle Union to discuss terms of union; a Council committee's report proposing Union-organised professional championships to come before the next Council; library hours extended to 10–5 on weekdays and 10–1 on Saturday; several amateur-status objections under investigation; and the Claremont, Harehills, South Norwood, Upper Tooting and Malvern clubs admitted. Signed Robt. Todd, Hon. Sec.
- "Porcupine" reports that A. L. Radford missed the Ten Mile Tricycle Championship after losing an argument with a dog; that it is a standing joke to ask the N.W. District Captain the feeling of a district he has not seen at the last two meets; that Chingford Hill's crown is shortly to be taken off and the dip filled up; and that the Wheel World carries a portrait and biography of H. R. Reynolds.
- List of forthcoming meetings from the Crystal Palace Challenge Cup on 26 July and the Bristol Meet races through Leamington, the Twenty-five Miles Championship at Taunton, the Hammersmith B.C. at Stamford Bridge and the W. Lancashire autumn sports at Liverpool, to the Surrey B.C. at Kennington Oval on 15 September.
