Articles in this issue
- Standing note that the latest hour for reception of copy for the "Gazette" is 6.0 p.m. on Tuesdays.
- Leading article answering the champion of the "Potterer" who took offence at an earlier piece on a lazy friend, arguing that a love of scenery and ruins is no monopoly of the indolent and that the much-maligned "Scorcher" deserves more respect than the man who dresses up his aversion to action as a feeling for nature. Signed Dodo.
- E. S. Price, Hon. Sec., repeats the programme for Saturday 22nd September at 3.30: One Mile Club Handicap, Twelve Miles District Scratch on bona fide roadsters for men with eight meets to their credit, Half-mile Club Scratch and a 220 yards flat race for boys under 16, with entries closing 17th September.
- Ashley W. Barnett asks that during his absence for the first two weeks in September all communications on Club business be addressed to Theo. Godlee.
- Members who put their names down are asked to send their 10s. subscriptions to Stephen P. Smith, 9, Morden Road, Blackheath, with any surplus over the sum required to be returned pro rata.
- Captain Ashley W. Barnett reports that H. N. Sharp has promised, if time and opportunity permit, to arrange for the final tie of the Lawn Tennis Tournament to be played at Stamford Bridge on the day of the race meeting.
- R. G. Francis moves the Crawley run forward to Saturday 15th September in place of the Wrotham run, because of the Stamford Bridge fixture, and asks for the names of those intending to join.
- A. H. Lown asks N.W. men willing to ride in the "12 Miles Roadster" race on 22nd September for the district to send him their names.
- Note that H. H. Sherriff did attend at Harrow on the 18th but could not stay to tea or write up the run, having started next morning for Switzerland, so the S.W. did not after all draw a blank.
- Tabulated district meets for the N.E., N.W., W., S.W. and the two S.E. divisions, with destinations including Stock, Upminster, Sunbury, Woking ("Maybury Inn") and East Grinstead, and a paperchase at Addington.
- District reports for August 25th: the N.E. at "The Orange Tree," Havering-atte-Bower, lighting lamps on a stony Hog Hill; only three N.W. men to Little Berkhempstead, where Jackson broke a treadle-pin and rode home one-footed; a West circular run by Hanwell, Norwood Green and Stanwell in choking dust, with a second account of tea at the "Manor Hotel," Datchet; the S.W. Captain R. M. Gruggen's long defence of the Oatlands Park Grotto against the West D.C.'s mockery; and a S.E. run to Riverhead marred by two broken treadle-pins, a broken crank and a fall, with Barker following the whole run on a borrowed tricycle.
- Concluding instalment carrying the tour from Ballachulish through Glencoe and the Moor of Rannoch to Tyndrum, the Trossachs and Loch Katrine, including a near-plunge into Loch Vennachar on a borrowed "Humber" tricycle, then by Stirling and Linlithgow to Edinburgh and on through Peebles and Moffat to Carlisle, about 500 miles in all. Signed A. Lloyd.
- "Wyvern" replies to the "Ex-Member's-Brother" and to the Captain, insisting he attacks the abuse of the privilege and not the privilege itself, and questioning an impecuniosity that can afford a bicycle and a club tea but not a subscription; a second correspondent argues that visitors should not count towards District attendance averages, which some D.C.s inflate by turning runs into picnics.
- Report of the championship at the Belgrave Grounds, Leicester, before some 10,000 spectators: Newton led five miles and was lapped by the ninth, Lees forced the pace to the last mile, and Wood took the lead half a lap from home to beat Howell by fifteen yards, with a last mile in 2 min. 31 1/2 sec. Mile-by-mile times appended, abbreviated from the "Sportsman."
- Harry Wilson lowered the records from 26 to 38 miles in the Surrey Bicycle Club's fifty miles championship, covering 19 miles 505 yards in the first hour, a distance only H. L. Cortis had bettered among amateurs, and finished the fifty in 2hr. 52min. 55sec., two and a quarter miles ahead of Vesey; a note follows on professionals suddenly overhauling the amateur records.
- Douglas McRae's account of a nine-day ride of about 500 miles from Beddington with a friend, by Luton, Nottingham, Worksop, Leeds, Nelson (the worst roads he has known), Kendal, Keswick, Carlisle and Selkirk to Edinburgh, staying at C.T.C. hotels and returning by boat with machines turned red by sea-water.
- Gossip on the "Zulu" seen tooling a tricycle with a donkey attached through West Wickham, the vindication of the long-carried spare treadle-pin, The Field's description of the "Rucker" bicycle, the Editor's storm-tossed holiday on the Norfolk Broads where Yarmouth is given over to hired sociables, and a suggestion that the Grotto controversy be settled by a General Meet there. Signed Porcupine.
- List sanctioned by the Captain under Rule 40: Lincoln B.C. and St. Paul's A.C. at Stamford Bridge (Sept. 1), Nottingham B.C. Sports (Sept. 8), Surrey B.C. Autumn Meeting at Kennington Oval (Sept. 15), L.A.C. at Stamford Bridge (Sept. 29) and again on Oct. 27.
- Contributions must be addressed to the Editor, L.B.C. Gazette, 35, Eastcheap, E.C., bear the author's name, be written on one side of the paper only, and be received by Tuesday evening for immediate insertion.
