  Tribute, signed L. V. B. (Bertarelli), to Council secretary Giovanni Lorenzi, who died on 3 March 1898 aged thirty after a sudden illness; it recalls his tireless, self-effacing work for the club and a visit to him at Cannero shortly before the end, mourning him on behalf of all members.

  Full programme for the club's 9-12 June 1898 Turin gathering, timed to the National Exhibition: receptions, a members' congress, a wreath-laying at the Statuto monument, a banquet at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele and an excursion to Superga, chaired by Count Capponi with Count Viarigi as vice-president; plus complete rules, timetable and categories for the accompanying Milano-Torino cycling ride, with a silver medal offered by Director General Johnson, an enamel badge, and registration open 5 April to 31 May at Via Giulini.

  Minutes of four Council sittings (5, 12, 26 January and 10 February 1898) chaired by Johnson: admitting the Società Velocipedistica Romana en bloc, concluding a reciprocity treaty with the Lower Austrian cycling clubs, approving the Milano-Torino ride's rules and fees, granting secretary Lorenzi two months' sick leave with Bertarelli standing in on the Rivista, and finally approving the 1897 Bilancio for presentation to the Assembly.

  Notice praising the Bologna consulate's own 80-page yearbook, a prologue by Olindo Guerrini, consular listings, affiliated hotels and repair boxes, and touring notes for rides radiating from Bologna, edited by consuls Carlo Sandoni and Antonio d'Ormea and funded from advertising and private subscription, held up as a model other sections should follow.

  Programme for the club's Florence gathering of 16-17 April 1898, held alongside the city's Toscanelli and Vespucci centenary celebrations, under honorary president Marchese Torrigiani (mayor of Florence) and Capo Console dott. Gaspare Capei: arrival of the caravans, a morning of sport and games at the Cascine, a country lunch, a flower-decorated cycling parade through the city and a closing banquet, with hour-by-hour timings and a registration coupon to the committee in Piazza Strozzi.

  The Istituto Geografico Militare has delivered the new joint Piedmont-Lombardy-Liguria map, drawn partly from its own 1:500,000 originals, now being bound for despatch to members in April-May 1898, folded in a special pattern that lets it be read in a moving vehicle even in wind.

  Capo Sezione Strade Bertarelli reports the Rebeschini press had reached page 700 of the three-volume, roughly 800-page, 826-profile Piedmont guide by 25 March (typesetting begun 8 February), on schedule for the Exhibition opening, while also reprinting 4,000 copies of the Grandi Comunicazioni guide, 3,000 of the Lazio guide and 3,000 of the Lombardy guide from existing stereotype plates.

  Bertarelli's first-person account of a short trip to Corsica: crossing times and fares from Nice, Marseille and Livorno (as little as 17 gold francs third class from Livorno to Bastia), the contrast between snow-capped peaks like Monte Cinto and the mild Ajaccio coast, roads he rates equal to Veneto's, and a recommendation of the Joanne guide, whose next edition will add a cycling chapter by Professor A. Courtet of the Bastia lycée.

  Running list, town by town from Abano to Voltri, of hotels and restaurants newly affiliated to the T.C.C.I.'s Sezione Comfort between 20 January and 20 February 1898, with member discounts, plus notice that the Tre Re at Sesto Calende and the Orientale-Cappello Nero in Venice have been struck off and the Birraria Bavaria in Naples has closed.

  List of shopkeepers, from Bari to Verona, newly granting Comfort Section discounts to members for the same period, naming firm, address, the discount percentage and the goods covered, cycling gear, photography, hats, hosiery and confectionery among them.

  The Sezione Movimento's Stanislao Paeboni warns that 68 members never returned the customs coupon proving re-export of their bicycle after a temporary-import Laissez-passer, and must now either prove re-export or pay the 11.50-lira duty, urging members to observe the customs formalities that keep the club's duty-free arrangements alive.

  Notice that the club is negotiating special return-fare terms with the Adriatica, Mediterranea and Sicula railway companies for members who ride to the Turin gathering and return home by train, with details to follow.

  New consular appointments by Council resolution of 16 March 1898, including Capi Consoli Domenico Rè at Ancona and Count Giacomo Douglas Scotti at Piacenza, and new consuls from Aosta to Johannesburg in the Transvaal.

  Director General Johnson, recalling how riders on his earlier Milano-Roma ride treasured its souvenir road profile, commissions a keepsake album for the Milano-Torino gita instead, a metre-and-a-half plan of the route with views of Milan, Novara, Vercelli and Turin painted by Fermini and reproduced by the Vittorio Turati works, entrusted to Bertarelli and mounting the silver medal at its centre.
