J.S. Johnson breaks four bicycle records in a single day at the Independence, Iowa kite-shaped track on October 30 — flying quarter (25 2/5), standing quarter (29), flying one-third mile (35 1/5), and flying half-mile (55 seconds) — behind the Stearns Yellow Fellow quadruplet.

Track owner C.W. Williams, who also controls the street railway, opera house, and leading hotel in Independence, Iowa, has welcomed the Stearns team warmly and insists that any doubters of Johnson's previous mile record should come and interview the town's horsemen who witnessed it.

On a soft track following overnight rain Johnson ties Tyler's standing quarter-mile record at 29 1/5 and shows unofficial flying-quarter speed of 25 2/5 behind the quadruplet, but heavy cloud cover and changing wind end the session before further official marks can be set.

In near-freezing conditions on October 28 Johnson officially breaks Zimmerman's flying quarter-mile record with 25 4/5, while Tom Eck disputes Harry Tyler's earlier claim to the same time on grounds that only one timer was used and the quarter was short.

With a triplet and quadruplet combining to pace the half-mile, a tired crew slackens on the final turn and Johnson finishes in 57 flat, missing Windle's newly set record of 55 4/5 by two seconds, leaving the half-mile record for another day.
